What Grade Would You Give Your Food? I give mine a B!

I like to be a good steward with my finances. I look for the best deals when I shop for food and health and beauty products. But that’s not the only factor to consider.

Quality Matters

I could buy a grocery cart full of really cheap food…and pay for it with my health. Instead I look for the best quality that fits within my budget.

My decisions about what to feed my family and what to use on our bodies and in our home are not just about organic vs. non-organic. They go deeper. I love to support companies that are using their business as a force for good. That means they are having a positive impact socially and environmentally.

If you’re like me you don’t have time to research every company to see how they do business. When it comes to our food, quality matters! That's why I support B Corp certified products like Stonyfield Yogurt and many more.

Do They Make the Grade?

That’s why it’s so nice to have the B Corp certification. You can simply look at the product package to see if you are supporting a quality company. When it comes to our food, quality matters! That's why I support B Corp certified products like Stonyfield Yogurt and many more.

Certified B Corps meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability.

Who’s in this great group? There are many B Corp certified companies (you can find a list here). I recently got the chance to try a few. They include:

  • Stonyfield Yogurt (we LOVE their whole milk grass-fed yogurt)
  • Pukka (tulsi tea is great for women)
  • Preserve (all of my kids wanted this toothbrush…but I told them mama gets it)
  • Purely Elizabeth (granola is one of my absolute favorite foods…this one is amazing)
  • King Arthur (as an avid gluten free baker this gluten free blend comes in handy)
  • Method (the kitchen is where I spend most of my day…which means my kids do too…and we have plenty of opportunties to wash hands!)
  • Pete and Gerry’s (I could eat eggs every single day. They are a nutrient powerhouse. But for me quality is so important when it comes to eggs since we use a lot of raw yolks.)

When it comes to our food, quality matters! That's why I support B Corp certified products like Stonyfield Yogurt and many more.
I’ve been a fan of Stonyfield for many years (and my kids sure love trying all their products!! They fought over our yogurt). I love knowing we are getting organic dairy.

Some of these companies are new to me. It’s always fun to be introduced to new companies and products that are high quality and making the world a better place. When it comes to our food, quality matters! That's why I support B Corp certified products like Stonyfield Yogurt and many more.

My Favorite

Of all the products my favorite was the Pukka tulsi tea. I’m working hard right now to balance my hormones and supercharge my diet to replenish nutrients after breastfeeding for 2 1/2 years (!!). Just days before receiving this package a friend suggested trying tulsi tea. You can imagine my great delight to find some on my doorstep!!

I’ve been combining the Pukka tulsi tea with a few other herbs like hibiscus, red raspberry leaf and nettles to really give myself a boost and support my hormones. This tea gets both an A+ and a B from me!When it comes to our food, quality matters! That's why I support B Corp certified products like Stonyfield Yogurt and many more.

Are you using your dollars to support companies that meet a high standard in addition to delivering quality food? It is important not only for our bodies but also for our children’s futures.

The next time you go shopping make sure your food makes the grade. Make sure it scores a B!

Ecocentric Mom Mom And Baby Box Review | Just Take A Bite

Ecocentric Mom January 2016 Mom and Baby Box Review

The Ecocentric Mom January 2016 Mom and Baby box was so much fun! I can’t wait to tell you all about it.

Ecocentric Mom Mom And Baby Box Review | Just Take A Bite

I am working with ecocentric mom to blog about this mom + baby box. I have been compensated for my time commitment to review this product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

It is hard to navigate the world of natural products. Especially when a baby is involved. That’s why I love getting my ecocentric mom + baby box. In this season of life where I’ve got three young children and just don’t have time to research and shop all day long a box is perfect.

Curious how it works?

Ecocentric mom does the hard work for you – finding great products that are natural and healthy.  You get a box full of fun stuff to try at a fraction of the cost.  It can be a one time event, or you can get a new box every other month. You’ll learn about and sample products you never even knew existed! It’s so much fun.

This month I received a mom and baby box, my personal favorite. Something for mama and something for baby. I usually share with my big kids too. They like to sample the snacks. Let’s take a look inside!

Ecocentric Mom Mom And Baby Box Review | Just Take A Bite

Acure Argan Oil Cleansing Towelettes

Acure’s plant and food based formulas are clinically driven to provide optimal performance at a cellular level. They believe it’s not enough to be natural, it also has to work. These cleansing towelettes gently remove makeup, dirt, sweat and environmental toxins. They’re perfect to use when cleansing your baby.

I happened to have a really LONG week with sick kids, gassy tummies, lots of work and hardly any time to shower…just after I received my box. These towelettes sure did come in handy! Just a quick wipe of the face to remove makeup and oil.

I also like to use them after a workout to freshen up a bit. Always a bonus before I head to school to pick up my kids.

Calming Fields Pachy Deodorant

Each deodorant is crafted with rich, plant-based oils, butters and powders, along with minerals and plant extracts. It all starts with sourcing the best made-in-nature, organic and vegan ingredients and transforming them into eective and simple products that actually work!

If you are looking for a deodorant with simple, pure ingredients this one is great! It goes on smoothly and smells really good.

Confession:

I haven’t worn deodorant in a year!

Ever since my youngest was diagnosed with a coconut/palm allergy I haven’t found one that is safe. She has a habit of sticking her fingers in my armpit when she nurses. Just about every natural deodorant (including this one) uses coconut oil.

So I tried it one time, but did not give it an extensive test.

Jenuinely Pure Baby Oil

Jenuinely Pure products are produced locally in the Ames, Iowa area, hand-crafted in small batches to ensure quality and freshness. Jenuinely Pure Baby Oil is a pure and natural product to help keep babies’ sensitive skin healthy. The organic oils soothe and soften the skin and the lavender + chamomile essential oils help nourish the skin and have a pleasant, calming aroma. (Also good for Momma’s skin!)

Another confession:

I used this for myself!

I can’t use much on my little one due to her allergies. Mostly I use this tallow balm or this one. But this baby oil was perfect for some really dry patches of skin I have! It rubs on easily and smells really nice. I could feel it working right away.

Tangie Stain Remover Bar

Tangie’s natural stain remover really works! It’s made with coconut oil, grapeseed oil, soap nuts liquid, oxalic acid, sea salt, citric acid, lemon essential oil and a whole lotta LOVE. Their powerful stain remover bar helps remove grass, juice, grease, blood and more. Made with plant-based & mineral ingredients, their formula is tough on stains, but gentle on the environment and perfect for removing any stains from baby. Simply wet fabric, rub bar on stain, and launder as normal.

This stain remover only has a few ingredients. It sounds great. I could not use it on our stuff since it is coconut oil based. But I would fully trust it if I could use it. The Tangie bar is so much safer than the stain removers filled with chemicals.

Ecover Automatic Dishwasher Tablets

Ecover is a global green cleaning company that believes sparkly dishes shouldn’t have side effects. With a history in Europe and a home in San Francisco, Ecover has been a pioneer in plant-based cleaning products for more than 30 years. From kitchens to bathrooms—and every room in between—Ecover has a powerful, planet-loving solution for your cleaning needs. It’s safe for you and your baby and is stress free and easy to use.

Of all of the natural products out there I find that dishwasher detergent is one of the hardest to find – one that really is safe and does a good job. I was very impressed with these tablets. And I loved the ease! No measuring powders. Just stick the tablet in.

My dishes came out very clean. I would totally use these!

Roasted Broad Beans

Beyond Better Foods launched ENLIGHTENED Ice Cream in 2013 and in 2015 introduced a new line of crunchy and savory snacks – ENLIGHTENED Crisps.  Made from roasted broad beans, a true superfood, ENLIGHTENED Crisps are a fantastic anytime snack. Whether you’re craving sweet, salty, or both, they’ve got you covered!

There is usually a fight over who gets to sample the snacks in the EM boxes. This time I let my daughter (age 7) eat most of the roasted broad beans (though my husband and I tried them too). She loved them!

I love that there are only a few simple ingredients.

They are crunchy, salty and very allergen friendly. The little bag would be great for the diaper bag or lunch boxes too. A perfect snack for on the go.

Soignee Botanical Shampoo

Soignee refuses to use harsh chemicals that may offer short-term benefits but compromises the health and integrity of skin and hair for the long term. Their cruelty-free formulas never contain parabens, mineral oil, silicones, sulfates, or polyethylene glycol.  This sulfate and silicone-free Botanical Shampoo gently cleanses hair of dirt, oils and impurities without stripping strands of essential moisture.

The first thing I noticed about this shampoo is the smell – amazing! I felt like I was at a salon just washing my hair.

But more than that it did a great job of getting my hair clean. I love that it is free of parabens and sulfates. I try to avoid those as much as possible.

I was bummed when I finished the bottle. I may have to buy a full size!

Of course this was the first item out of the box as soon as I opened it. My kids all grabbed for it! But I let the little one try it first.

I love how simple and yet intriguing this puzzle set is. My one year old instantly started stacking the blocks and knocking them down. My older kids wanted to try making all of the animals.

This is perfect for carrying in the diaper bag. I like to have it on hand when we are waiting for older siblings to get out of a class or practice or even when I need a couple minutes with two hands to make dinner.

My son would have loved the farm animal set! The number and letters puzzles look fun too.

Crunchy Balm Review and Giveaway

Don’t let the dry winter weather take its toll on delicate or sensitive skin. Crunchy balm is safe, natural and effective for the whole family.

Crunchy Balm Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

When seeking natural health and beauty products most people instantly jump to coconut oil. Sure, it’s good stuff.

Coconut = dry skin.

But did you know that coconut can actually dry your skin more? My oldest really struggles all winter with dry skin on her hands that gets so bad she has little cuts all over and it’s so painful.

We used to put tons of coconut oil on…and it just got worse. Eventually I started just taking our lard and tallow from the fridge to put on her hands. MUCH better. So we stopped using coconut oil for skin care.

Crunchy Balm Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Though she didn’t appreciate smelling like lard!

Now I also have to be very selective with skin care products with a child allergic to coconut. So if we don’t want to use coconut or smell like a barnyard what do we do?

We use Crunchy Balm!

I really think I could bathe in this stuff. It is made from grass-fed tallow and quality essential oils. Unlike most balms it is super soft and creamy and not greasy at all. It’s like whipped butter.

Crunchy Balm Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Crunchy Balm does NOT contain:

  • petroleum based ingredients
  • artificial colors, ingredients or fragrances
  • chemicals
  • GMO’s

It is full of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Exactly what your skin needs. Plus there is definitely no barnyard smell to Crunchy Balm. It has a mild floral smell.

I love to use it on my toddler after a bath. She gets dry skin on her feet and has all around sensitive skin. Crunchy Balm clears it all up. And since she likes to copy everything her siblings do she MUST have some on her hands to rub in by herself. And I can feel perfectly comfortable with that. What a blessing.

When my oldest is having issues with her hands we reach right for the Crunchy Balm. Just a small amount is all she needs. It’s instant relief. In her own words, “It’s magical.”

We even used it for windburn recently after the kids played outside for a long time in the cold and snow.

Crunchy Balm Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

I really only have two “complaints” about Crunchy Balm.

  1. I want a bigger container so we don’t run out. That is how much I love it. With all of our skin issues we go through it quickly, even though a little really does go a long way. In all honesty I bet this container will last us several months. It just depends how much little hands take out of the jar when they use it.
  2. I found that when using the scented version on my face it irritated my eyes and made them red. I have VERY sensitive eyes. Just a little bit of eye liner or eye shadow (even a natural kind) can make my eye swell. So if you have sensitive eyes use caution putting the scented Crunchy Balm on your face or touching your face if it’s on your hands.

I did get to try the scent free version. I LOVE using it on my face!!! No sensitivity at all.

There’s more.

Emilie, the creator of Crunchy Balm, also makes other quality products like lip balm. Or you can try Crunchy Balm in a few different scents!

Are you ready to try some Crunchy Balm for yourself? One lucky reader gets a free container! Enter below for a chance to win.

Don’t forget to head over to Crunchy Balm to check it out for  yourself. Then show her some love by visiting and liking her facebook page.

I just might have to go order more to stock up. This stuff really is “the balm.”

After you try it come back and let me know what you think. I have a feeling you’re going to love it!

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway!

Take one simple step towards better health this year by updating your health and beauty routine. I’m so excited to share my Cheshire Fields review and giveaway of some amazing products!

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

I am working with Cheshire Fields to blog about these products. I have been compensated for my time commitment to review these products. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

Just about everyone is on the lookout for simple ways to improve their health. Especially as the new year starts.

I’m not big on diets or spending a lot of money to feel good. I don’t know about you but I also don’t have a lot of extra time to learn to make my own health and beauty products.

But I do love when there are affordable, homemade, high quality products that are in line with my views on health.

I recently got to sample some products from my friend Michelle at Cheshire Fields. She has an assortment of handmade soaps, shampoos, balms, sprays and more that are 100% natural (and I really mean that…not just labeled organic or using the term natural without much meaning behind it).

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

When it comes to natural health and beauty most people jump to coconut oil. It is amazing stuff.

But since I have a toddler with a coconut allergy I try to keep our house pretty much coconut free. That means just about every soap, lotion and shampoo is out.

I was thrilled to find out that Michelle has many products that are not only coconut free but also dairy and nut free! Natural products that are safe for my family. I didn’t think they existed!

Tallow Balm

The first product I tried as soon as it arrived was the tallow balm.

I haven’t been able to use lotion in over a year! A year!! Can you say dry skin?

I was thrilled to try the tallow balm and was not disappointed. Just a tiny bit goes a long way and creates soft, smooth skin. Plus it smells so good with all of the essential oils added.

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

I love that it is safe to use on my entire family, even my kids with allergies. It also comes in a compact case that is easy to take wherever you go. We brought it along for all of our holiday travel.

My oldest likes to use it on her hands at bed time and wear socks on her hands (thanks to Michelle’s suggestion!). By morning she has super soft skin again instead of dry, cracked hands.

Sinus Balm

The sinus balm was a Christmas present for my seven year old. That might sound strange to some. But she has struggled with environmental allergies and mouth breathing for years.

Having another natural tool for helping her breathe better at night is a huge blessing.

It is also made with olive oil and is very safe. The scent is pretty strong. But that is how it works.

My son had a stuffy nose the other day and told us he had to breathe with his mouth open. We put some behind his ears and on his neck. He didn’t wake up once in the night!

Disinfectant & Freshener Spray

With young kids in school I don’t have to tell you how excited I am to have a safe disinfectant spray! It is so easy to use. Just shake and spray.

It makes my house smell wonderful (thieves will do that). Plus I can freshen things in a matter of seconds.

No need to use chemicals to clean your house. This spray can be used directly on surfaces to get rid of the germs.

I was so glad to have it around after my daughter had the flu. It has also come in very handy for the potty seat that sits in our bathroom. It is almost impossible to keep that clean and free of bad smells. The freshener spray worked wonderfully.

Tea Tree + Lavender Freshener

The tea tree + lavender spray is one of Michelle’s new products. It is similar to the disinfectant spray, but with different oils.

I can’t decide which one I like better. The tea tree and lavender combination is very floral and leaves the whole house smelling bright and fresh. I will be using both all winter long!

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Itch Relief Remedy

When you have a child with eczema there is a never ending search for products to help calm the itching. So I was very excited to get to try this.

It comes as a powder that you can make into a paste. It has a very mild scent and soothing ingredients. Just a pinch goes a long way so this will last a long time.

Chamomile Lavender Dry Shampoo

I wash my hair every day. Otherwise my hair gets so oily. It is fine and thin.

When Michelle told me about her dry shampoo I was so excited. I can actually get by without washing my hair once in a while with this product. Simply rub it into the scalp to absorb oil. Plus it smells amazing!

For those mornings where my little one just doesn’t want to sleep and let me take a shower this dry shampoo is a life saver! I can leave the house without feeling like I look unshowered. It is even great for days that I wear my hair down. By afternoon it already looks greasy. Just a bit of dry shampoo and I’m looking good again and smelling good too!

The chamomile lavender is great for light colored hair like mine. There is another one specifically for dark hair.

I was so impressed with all of these Cheshire Fields products. I even bought a bunch for Christmas presents for the women in my family! But you don’t have to wait until Christmas. They make great gifts any time of year.

Plus this is just a small sample of all of the great products Michelle has to offer. She is so passionate about sharing homemade, natural products.

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Michelle has generously offered to give away a hair care bundle to one of my lovely readers. It includes:

  • Henna Shampoo Bar
  • Hair Oil
  • Dry Shampoo (you choose light or dark)

I don’t know about you, but I could use some serious hair pampering this year!

Can’t wait to see if you’re the winner? Head over to Cheshire Fields right now and use the code MYNEWYEAR to get 10% off your whole order all month long!

I hope you check out all of the Cheshire Fields products. Come back and let me know what looks good or what you’ve tried.

ecocentric mom: June Mom Box Review

We may have just celebrated Father’s Day, but it is always a good time to celebrate moms!  A mom box from ecocentric mom is the perfect way to do just that.ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

**I am working with ecocentric mom to blog about this mom box. I have been compensated for my time commitment to review this product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.**

Today I’m back to tell you about another fun ecocentric mom box I received.  This one is for moms, and it’s packed with products you can feel good about.

Here is how it works.  Ecocentric mom does the hard work for you – finding great products that are natural and healthy.  You get a box full of fun stuff to try at a fraction of the cost.  It can be a one time event, or you can get a new box every other month.

This month I had an extra challenge doing my review.  With my little one’s recent coconut allergy diagnosis I’ve had to stop using any products with coconut…which includes most natural health and beauty products.

But no need to worry.  I passed along some of the products I couldn’t use to my family.  So you’ll still get to hear a first hand report!

Here are the products in this month’s ecocentric mom box.ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Lillian Eve Nail Polish

Lillian Eve is a mompreneur founded nail polish company committed to living a colorful life. Our nail polishes are vegan, cruelty-free, and toxin-free. Sweet Dreams and Bliss are two of our most popular polishes from our new spring collection, Just Breathe.”

I think I’ve painted my nails once in the last fifteen years…no joke.  I had my nails painted for my wedding (13 years ago!) and probably not since then.  It’s just not something I like to do since I’m always in the kitchen working with my hands.  I don’t want anything toxic in our food!  Plus I’ve got little ones that I feed with my hands.

But I do paint my toe nails every so often.  I LOVE this color for toe nails (sweet dreams).  It is perfect for someone like me that likes just a hint of color.  And being on my toes I shouldn’t have to worry about any ingredients possibly impacting my sensitive little one.ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

My oldest and I tried this nail polish.  I had high hopes, but there were a few things I wasn’t crazy about.

  • The nail polish was really runny and started dripping off our nails.  I had to be extra careful to only get a small amount on the brush.  Our nails ended up looking a bit sloppy.
  • The smell of the polish was very strong/chemical like.  Even my son instantly declared, “That stinks!”  I could smell it for quite a while after painting my nails…and it was on my feet.
  • The list of ingredients is quite lengthy, and I’m not sure what a lot of it is.  Their definition of toxin-free may be different than mine.

That being said they do have a ton of fun colors!  And I’m sure it is safer than what you’d buy at the local drugstore.

Product Pricing: $12 for 0.5 fl oz or 15 ml – No expiration.ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Simply 7 Snacks

“Nature is beautiful and it tastes great! Why mess with perfection? We believe you can balance healthiness with taste to be deliciously wholesome. Simply 7 ensures that every ingredient is not only natural but is SIMPLE. Their 7 core standards are: 0 Grams Trans Fat and No Cholesterol, Gluten-free, All Natural Recipes, No artificial colors or flavors, No Preservatives, Simple Ingredients and Simply Delicious.”

We eat pretty much no packaged food.  The only exception I make is having chips once in a while.  I usually buy olive oil potato chips or sweet potato chips.

So I was pretty excited to have some new chips to try.  This months ecocentric mom box contained two varieties – hummus chips and quinoa chips.  Both tasted great!  I ate the bag of quinoa chips myself…this is a box for mom after all.

My son couldn’t try either variety because they both contain corn (which he is allergic to).  My older daughter and my husband sampled the hummus chips (they have dairy, so I couldn’t try them).  So it was hit and miss in terms of allergens.  But in terms of flavor we loved them.

I love pretty much anything salty and crunchy.  The quinoa chips fit the bill perfectly.  An added bonus was that the hummus chips were not spicy.  That’s a make or break point for my oldest with oral sensory issues.

I would love to try their lentil chips.  My son could even eat those.  I may have to do some shopping!

If you are looking for a fun snack once in a while Simply 7 Snacks are good options.  This was my favorite product in the box!

Product Pricing: Hummus Sea Salt 1oz – $1.00, Quinoa Sea Salt 0.8 oz, $1.00

Goddess Garden

“We created Goddess Garden because our family loves the great outdoors. Unlike traditional chemical sunscreens,  Goddess Garden is safe, effective, biodegradable, and free from harmful chemicals.”

I think Goddess Garden is a really great product with quality ingredients for the times when you need sunscreen.  We don’t use sunscreen just for playing outside.  We like to soak up our daily vitamin D!  But if we go to the beach or know we’ll be out all day then I put it on my kiddos.  We haven’t had a day like that yet this summer.  So no sunscreen so far!  I will be trying this on the big kids when we head out on vacation soon.  It does have coconut, so my little one and I won’t be trying it.

Product Pricing: $14.99-$17.99 for 3.4 oz bottle

Bella Organics

“Vanilla Mint Deodorant Creme: Beauty products are often full of toxic ingredients, especially the conventional deodorants. Bella Organics Vanilla Mint Deodorant Crème is a perfect alternative to a health conscious mom. We offer an organic, aluminum-free deodorant that actually works!”

This is another product I did not get to try because it contains coconut oil.  But it smells AMAZING.  It smells like a minty dessert.  I’d much rather smell like that than sweat!  Vanilla mint deodorant creme is a bit different from other natural deodorants that I’ve tried because it is creamy.  I think that would be very soothing to sensitive underarm skin.  It also contains natural ingredients that work with your body.  Any deodorant without chemicals or aluminum gets two thumbs up from me.  I’m anxious to look into their other products.

Product Pricing: 0.25 ounces for $3.99ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Meliora K Laundry Powder

Meliora K‘s Laundry Powder is free of fragrances, dyes, and brighteners. We list every ingredient clearly on the label. Works great in standard and HE washers. Our vision is a clean, happy, and healthy home that doesn’t rely on secret formulas and mysterious chemicals.”

I think I’m starting to sound like a broken record here.  This laundry detergent from Meliora K is another product with coconut oil.  So I let my mom try it.

After using the laundry powder my mom did a good smell check – no fragrance at all!!  That is a very important point for me.  I don’t want my clothes smelling like perfume.

She said the clothes and towels she washed were very clean.  There weren’t many suds in the washer, but that is the way it should be when you aren’t adding foaming agents to your soap.

The only concern my mom had was that it didn’t seem to dissolve well in cold water.  But I think that is the case with most natural powder detergents.  You have to dissolve them in warm or hot water first and then switch to cold.

All in all a great product that cleans well, has no fragrance and no chemicals.  I wish I could use it!!

Product Pricing: $9.99 for 20 load (40 HE loads) canister, $15.99 for 64 load (128 HE loads) load canister.

Ecocentric Soap

“Treat yourself to a luxurious soap made with all natural ingredients and formulated to soothe, hydrate, exfoliate and nourish your beautiful skin to feel amazing.”

My sister-in-law tried the ecocentric soap.  Here is what she had to say:

It really cleanses very well.  It took my water resistant eye make up off right away. It did not just smear the make up across my face like some cleansers have done in the past. It actually took it right off. I was really excited about that, but then the sensitive skin under and around my eyes started to burn a little shortly after I finished washing my face. This morning they are still quite sensitive and a little burning, also slightly swollen under my eyes. So I will not be using the soap on my face again, sadly. I don’t have sensitive skin, so this reaction actually really surprises me.

I also used to the soap in the shower. It lathers well and really does cleanse very well. I really enjoy the scent. I tried it on my legs to shave them, to see how it compares to the other coconut oil based bar soap that I buy. It lathers well, so it worked very well to use for shaving my legs. However, my skin was very tight after I was dried off from my shower. I definitely would not be able to go without lotion using this soap.

I would buy the soap again because it really does cleanse well. The ingredients are mostly good. I do wonder about the quality of essential oils they use in the soap. And I love the scent. However, I would use caution on any sensitive areas.”

Product Pricing: $6

This ecocentric mom box contained some really amazing, natural products.

I was sad I couldn’t try some of them.  But that’s life with a coconut allergy.

Now I’m craving more Simply 7 chips!  I may have to place an order very soon.

Ecocentric Mom – Mom Box Review

ecocentric mom mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie**I am working with Ecocentric Mom to blog about this Mom box. I have been compensated for my time commitment to review this product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.**

I’m so excited to share with you another box from ecocentric Mom!  I’ve reviewed a Mom + Baby box before.  Now I get to tell you about a Mom box!

Ecocentric Mom does the hard work for you – finding great products that are natural and healthy.  You get a box full of fun stuff to try at a fraction of the cost.  It can be a one time event, or you can get a new box every other month.  I think it’s like having Christmas all year long!

There are many neat products that you may not otherwise hear about.  In the two boxes I’ve received I have already found multiple items I will definitely be buying again.

This month I tried a Mom box.  It was such a treat to get a box with items just for me (there was even an extra special treat for this dairy free mom…bet you can guess which one).  Here are the items I tried.

 Country Choice Organic Oatmeal

Country Choice Organic is a producer of USDA certified organic oatmeal. These single serve oatmeal packets include a multigrain blend of oats, rye, barley and wheat. At only 160-170 calories, each serving is a powerful source of fiber and protein.  Maple Spice with Raisin and Cranberry Apple.”

Packaged oatmeal is not something I would normally buy since I like to soak our oats.  But it can come in handy when you are traveling or for those days here and there where you just don’t have time to make anything.  It came in handy for us recently when all three kids had the flu and I needed an easy breakfast for my husband!

I can’t eat most of the grains in this oatmeal, so I can’t give a personal opinion.  But my husband really enjoyed it!  Take note that it is not gluten free.  It does have rye, barley and wheat.

Goddess Garden

“We created Goddess Garden because our family loves the great outdoors. Unlike traditional chemical sunscreens, Goddess Garden is safe, effective, biodegradable, and free from harmful chemicals.”

This looks like a really great product and a safe alternative to traditional sunscreens.  I’ll admit we haven’t actually tried it yet since it’s only 40 degrees here!  I don’t put sunscreen on myself or my kids regularly because I think it’s good to soak up some sun.  But if I know we are going to be outside in direct sun for a long time (like at the beach or sitting at a parade or a baseball game) then I do.  I will definitely be trying this when the time comes.

Earth’s Enrichment

“This USDA Organic Certified body & skin care company prides itself on being health conscious and environmentally friendly. Each product is 95%+ organic & provides the best skin care that organic products can!”

I got to try Earth’s Enrichment’s Lavender of the valley sugar scrub.  I am such a low maintenance person when it comes to personal care.  I don’t usually take the time for things like sugar scrubs.  But I decided to give this a try.  I have only used it on my face so far, but it’s great!!  I figured I’d only try it once and forget about it…but I’ve been using it almost every night.  It makes my skin feel so fresh, clean and soft.

I also love that I know what every single ingredient in the scrub is.  It is so natural you could actually eat it…though I don’t really recommend it.  They have a whole line of healthy skin care products.  I may have to try more of them.

Pure + Remedy (two products)

“Botanical Firming Eye Cream: This powerful firming eye cream is formulated with dozens of botanical extracts, plant oils, and vitamins to boost collagen production, promote cellular rejuvenation and repair wrinkles. It will leave your eye area soft and hydrated with fine lines and wrinkles minimized.”

“Vitamin C Concentrate Eye Gel: This gentle and lightweight eye gel is a concentrated delivery system for a high form of active, bioavailable Vitamin C to skin around eyes. It instantly cools and soothes the delicate eye area.”

Pure + Remedy has two great eye products.  The firming eye cream is great for wrinkles.  I think I’ll have to use it a while longer to notice any results.  I don’t have much in the way of wrinkles yet.  But I think this will still be helpful to keep my skin nice.

The eye gel is cooling under the eyes.  It feels like a little pick-me-up for weary mom eyes.  I will add this to my nightly routine some days.

Eco Eggs

Eco eggs are made in the USA from plants, 100% renewable content, and are fully compostable after use. They are made from non-toxic, durable, plant-based plastic and have a secure closure. eco eggs can be stored and reused for many Easters. After use, dispose of eggs in industrial compost.”

What a fun surprise to see an Easter egg in my box this month!  My kids are enjoying playing with it.  But how cool that I can compost it when we’re done with it!

Equal Exchange

Equal Exchange minis are made with cacao (cocoa beans) from farmer co-operatives in the Dominican Republic and Peru. The sugar and vanilla are also fairly traded and organic. The sugar comes from co-operatives in Paraguay and the vanilla from a co-operative in Madagascar.”

This was my favorite part of the box…dairy free chocolate!  Just for me.  I don’t eat much chocolate these days since it can make my little one spit up (though thankfully that’s getting better as she gets older).  But this was a real treat.  Each mini is the perfect size.  Not too much.  Just a little taste.  Plus they don’t have any junk in them.  And no soy!  Now I’m tempted to buy a full size bar.

Bear’s Beauty

“100% Natural Hand-Made Small Batch Vegan Skin Care or the whole family! Essential Oils & Clays are suspended in a base of Shea Butter and Coconut Oil to give you a naturally fresh experience without chemicals!”

I got to try the Bear’s Beauty Grapefruit and Lavender deodorant.  I have a hard time finding deodorant that actually works.  I sweat more than I would like.  But this brand works quite well!  Plus it smells really good.  I’ve been using this almost every day since I got it.

I am interested in trying some of their other products now.  Especially the chocolate toothpaste!  If you want to try their products you can use the coupon code  ECOMOM2015 for 15% off  your first order over $25.  What a great deal.

Eco Trek Whole Foods Bar

“The Whole Food Bars are created from nutrient-dense ingredients, avoiding refined sugars and artificial sweeteners. They contain a wide variety of green foods, and happen to be vegan & dairy-free too!”

I have mixed feelings about this bar.  I like that it has so much nutrition packed into one little bar.  It has 100% RDA of so many vitamins and minerals.  It also tastes really good (I could only try a little since I don’t tolerate nuts well and it is made with peanuts).  I had to stop myself from eating more than a couple small bites.  My husband and my daughter tried it too and agreed that it tasted great.

On the other hand I am not a fan of some of the ingredients like soy protein, Fruitrim (not totally sure what that is), Fructooligosaccharides, Agave Syrup, Resveratrol, Soy Protein Crisps and Natural Flavors.  So this is not a product I would buy because of the ingredients.  I’d rather make my own bar.

Brigit True Organics

Brigit True Organics is a woman-owned, organic skin care company that offers hypoallergenic body care for super-sensitive skin. Their whole line is gluten-free, soy-free and doesn’t contain any nut oils.
Their Peppermint Lip Balm is crafted with soothing healing herbs to bring immediate comfort and long-lasting protection to sensitive, dry, or chapped lips.”

I love this lip balm!  It came at the perfect time since I’m out of my old chap stick and my lips are dry from the long winter.  The peppermint is very refreshing too.  Best of all this balm is made with quality ingredients.

Overall this was a pretty cool box.  As a mom of three little ones I don’t take much time for myself or get very many things that are just for me.  So this was a real treat.  It would be fun to get one of these on a regular basis!  If you haven’t checked out ecocentric mom you really should.

Ecocentric Mom – Mom + Baby Box Review

Ecocentric Mom: Mom and Baby Box Review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

**I am working with Ecocentric Mom to blog about this Mom + Baby box. I have been compensated for my time commitment to review this product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.**

Have you ever heard of Ecocentric Mom?  I hadn’t until recently.  It is a great site that finds quality, natural products and sends you a box every other month.  You can choose from three types of boxes – Mom, Mom + Baby or Pregnancy.

I just got my first box to try.  It is a mom and baby box, and it is filled with great stuff.  Now I get to share it with you!

It is neat to see new, natural products that I may not know about otherwise.  Plus I didn’t have to go to the store to shop for them!  This is a great way to find products I feel good about and want to use.  Then if I find something I really like I can order just that specific product.

Here are the products included in this month’s box, descriptions and my reviews.

Mama Loves Me by Mara Van Fleet
“In this delightful book, a cute baby elephant shares his admiration for his mom’s special talents—using her trunk to reach up high, to play hide-and-seek, to give him a quick shower, and to kiss him at goodnight.”

This is such a cute book!  All three of my children love it.  I like how the trunk is part of each page.  I also love that it is a quality board book that my little one can hold and not destroy.  She is in the chew on books phase.  So this is perfect.Ecocentric Mom: Mom and Baby Box Review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Snack Out Loud Crunchy Bean Snack
“Crunchy Bean Snacks are an irresistible, family-friendly savory snack made simply from pinto beans, sunflower oil and natural seasoning so they’re naturally Non-GMO, gluten-free, nut free and soy free. Yummy!”

I wasn’t sure what to think of a crunchy bean.  But this was really tasty!  Even my kids loved it, which surprised me.  They reminded me of spiced peanuts.  So it was really a treat for me (that can’t have peanuts).  Plus I love anything crunchy.  I may have to see if these are sold at our local health food store for an easy on-the-go snack.Ecocentric Mom: Mom and Baby Box Review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Kelapo Extra Virgin Coconut Oil
“Add excitement to your favorite dishes—and promote a healthy lifestyle—with our Kelapo™ Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. Kelapo Coconut Oil is organic, cold-pressed, and fair trade approved.”

Personally, I’ve never tried a brand of coconut oil I didn’t like.  So I can’t say if Kelapo is better or worse than any other brand.  But I can say it tastes great!  I loved slathering it on my bread.  When you’re dairy free you have to have good coconut oil on hand.  I would gladly have a big jar of Kelapo in my kitchen.

Pure Essentials Botanic Bath Infusions
Botanic Bath Infusions are 3-in-1 relaxing bath therapies that combine restorative mineral sea salts, fragrant essential oils, and curative herbs and flowers in a 100% biodegradable soilon pouch.”

These bath salts look great…if I could ever find time to actually take a bath.  I might have to just try them in a foot soak soon.

Amara Baby Food
This is an easy and healthy way to travel with baby food.  We got to try the apple.  The only ingredient is apples!  I simply added some milk to the powder (no heating, no waiting, no glass jars to carry.  And any liquid, including water and breastmilk, will work).  Both of my big kids loved it.  My little one isn’t old enough to try it yet.  But I’d definitely let her have it when she’s a little older.Ecocentric Mom: Mom and Baby Box Review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Bum Boosa Bamboo
Bum Boosa replaces the traditional synthetic or tree-pulp wet wipe using an immensely renewable and sustainable grass: bamboo. Nourishing plant-based ingredients such as Calendula, Chamomile, and Organic Aloe Vera care for delicate skin. Scented with Lavender and Sweet Orange essential oils.”

I normally use cloth wipes.  And when I do use disposable they are unscented.  So it was strange to me to use wipes with so much scent.  But they work very well.  I really like that they are made without any chemicals.

Flavrz
Flavrz Organic Drink Mixes – world’s best organic, deliciously healthy and affordable, alternative to the usual artificially flavored, colored and sweetened beverages. In addition to being delicious, healthy and affordable Flavrz Organic Drink Mixes are great for the environment when used with a reusable water bottle. Our small, easy to carry, easy to use 2Go pouch is a concentrate that one adds to ten to sixteen ounces water at home, office, gym or on the go.

Six Flavrs – Sport, Energy, Immunity, Cherry Berry, Tropical Peach and Lemon-Lime
Organic, NON-GMO, Gluten-Free”

The Falvrz drink mix has great flavor.  I tried the sport. It was a nice treat to have something besides water to drink.  I like that you can make your drink as sweet or mild as you like.  I diluted mine quite a bit.  But I’m not a fan of the agave syrup it contains.  So I wouldn’t buy this normally.

“The perfect way to catch all of your ideas – as they happen. 100 heavy weight white cards fit nicely into pockets or handbags for quick jots of important things. Complete with a heavy card  stock carrying case.”

These little note cards are so fun and have a variety of cute pictures on them.  I’m always writing things down so I won’t forget (hello, mommy brain!).  These are handy to have on hand both at home and on the go.  Small note cards are also great for keeping little hands busy when you’re waiting somewhere.  Grab a few cards and crayons before you head out the door.

O & N Collective
O&N Collective is an online apothecary specializing in certified organic and natural skin and personal care products.  Our mission is to provide safe and effective products that promote health and wellness.”

This looks like a great site for ordering specialty personal care products.  Included in the Ecocentric Mom box is a coupon for 15% off your order.  That is a huge savings when it comes to natural products!

Natural Seal Liquid Bandage

“Don’t let a small scrape turn into a trip to the hospital, protect your little ones with Natural Seal Liquid Bandage! For the ultimate protection for your little ones, use on cuts, scrapes, burns, rashes, blisters & more!”

Of all of the products in the box I think I enjoyed this one the most!  This liquid bandage is so easy to use and perfect for little ones that pick at bandages and pull them off.  As long as you can get them to wait the minute or two for the liquid to seal you’re all set.  No peeling off sticky bandages and pulling hairs.  No tears.  Just spray it on and wash it off.  The next time one of my kids gets a scrape I’m using this for sure!

Dental Health, Redmond Earthpaste and {a Giveaway}

Earthpaste Review and Giveaway || Homemade Dutch Apple PieIt’s mid-October.  Which means Halloween will be here soon!  In addition to the pumpkins, cute kids and fun costumes there will be an abundance of candy and treats.

I’m thankful that my kids are still young enough to not get that into Halloween.  We do let them trick-or-treat right by our house.  They enjoy dressing up and seeing all the other costumes.

When we get home they pretty much hand over the candy.  My son can’t have any of it because of allergies.  My daughter is usually allowed to have a couple chocolate treats.  The rest is traded in to Daddy for money.Earthpaste Review and Giveaway || Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Even though my kids don’t eat much in the way of processed candy I still make them treats at home.

Regardless of the source they are still sweets…and can have an impact on the health of your teeth.

The natural solution is to brush well twice a day.  That’s great!  But what are you using to brush your teeth?

Most toothpaste is filled with artificial color and flavors, chemicals to make it foam and fluoride.  None of which you need to be putting in your mouth.

What are the alternatives?  You can make  your own.  But not everyone wants to go that route.

You can also buy a natural toothpaste.  Unfortunately almost every natural toothpaste I’ve ever seen has glycerin as one of the main ingredients.  And while it isn’t necessarily bad for your overall  health, it’s not that great for your teeth.  Glycerin coats the teeth and prevents remineralization.

I learned that the hard way after using a natural toothpaste for a while and all of a sudden having a mouth full of sensitive teeth.

As if toothpaste for adults wasn’t bad enough, take a look at kids’ toothpaste.  They are all neon colored and so full of artificial flavors.  Not to mention the fluoride that is in toothpaste for kids as young as two!  But if your kids are like mine they can’t handle the mint flavor of adult toothpaste.Earthpaste Review and Giveaway || Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

So what is the solution?

Recently I tried Redmond Earthpaste for the first time.  My initial reaction…I LOVE it!!  But better yet…so do my kids!

Earthpaste contains no chemicals, no colors, no artificial flavors and no glycerin.  They have several wonderful flavors.  I can’t tell you which is my favorite because I like them all.

I love that Earthpaste uses essential oils for flavor.

Best of all – the kids’ flavor is lemon…and my kids like it!  No “spicy” toothpaste.  No overly sweet toothpaste.  Just a mild lemon flavor that even my child with oral sensory issues enjoys.

Right now I alternate between cinnamon and wintergreen.  Both have very mild flavors and leave my mouth feeling fresh.  There is also peppermint and now spearmint!  They are all great choices.

The cleaning power comes from the Redmond clay.  It is antibacterial and even helps digestive health.  So there is no need to worry if your kids (or you!) swallow their toothpaste.  It’s actually good for them.

Halloween is coming.  Extra sweet treats are coming.  But you can keep your kids’ teeth healthy with quality toothpaste.

I’m very excited to be giving away a two pack of Earthpaste to THREE readers!

This is the best toothpaste I’ve found.  I hope you try it and like it as much as my family does.
