Crunchy Balm Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Toups and Co Organics Review

Don’t let the dry winter weather take its toll on delicate or sensitive skin. Toups and Co Organics is safe, natural and effective for the whole family.

Don't let the dry winter weather take its toll on delicate or sensitive skin. Toups and Co Organics Tallow balm is safe, natural and effective for the whole family.

When seeking natural health and beauty products most people instantly jump to coconut oil. Sure, it’s good stuff.

Coconut = dry skin.

But did you know that coconut can actually dry your skin more? My oldest really struggles all winter with dry skin on her hands that gets so bad she has little cuts all over and it’s so painful.

We used to put tons of coconut oil on…and it just got worse. Eventually I started just taking our lard and tallow from the fridge to put on her hands. MUCH better. So we stopped using coconut oil for skin care.

Don't let the dry winter weather take its toll on delicate or sensitive skin. Toups and Co Organics Tallow balm is safe, natural and effective for the whole family.

Though she didn’t appreciate smelling like lard!

Now I also have to be very selective with skin care products with a child allergic to coconut. So if we don’t want to use coconut or smell like a barnyard what do we do?

We use Toups and Co Organics Tallow Balm!

I really think I could bathe in this stuff. It is made from grass-fed tallow and quality essential oils. Unlike most balms it is super soft and creamy and not greasy at all. It’s like whipped butter.

Don't let the dry winter weather take its toll on delicate or sensitive skin. Toups and Co Organics Tallow balm is safe, natural and effective for the whole family.

Tallow Balm does NOT contain:

  • petroleum based ingredients
  • artificial colors, ingredients or fragrances
  • chemicals
  • GMO’s

It is full of fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E and K. Exactly what your skin needs. Plus there is definitely no barnyard smell to Crunchy Balm. It has a mild floral smell.

I love to use it on my toddler after a bath. She gets dry skin on her feet and has all around sensitive skin. Toups and Co Organics Tallow Balm clears it all up. And since she likes to copy everything her siblings do she MUST have some on her hands to rub in by herself. And I can feel perfectly comfortable with that. What a blessing.

When my oldest is having issues with her hands we reach right for the Tallow Balm. Just a small amount is all she needs. It’s instant relief. In her own words, “It’s magical.”

We even used it for windburn recently after the kids played outside for a long time in the cold and snow.

Don't let the dry winter weather take its toll on delicate or sensitive skin. Toups and Co Organics Tallow balm is safe, natural and effective for the whole family.

I really only have two “complaints” about Crunchy Balm.

  1. I want a bigger container so we don’t run out. That is how much I love it. With all of our skin issues we go through it quickly, even though a little really does go a long way. In all honesty I bet this container will last us several months. It just depends how much little hands take out of the jar when they use it.
  2. I found that when using the tallow frankincense face balm on my face it irritated my eyes and made them red. I have VERY sensitive eyes. Just a little bit of eye liner or eye shadow (even a natural kind) can make my eye swell. And almost any essential oil near my face makes my eyes sting. So if you have sensitive eyes use caution putting the scented Balm on your face or touching your face if it’s on your hands.I did get to try the scent free version. I LOVE using it on my face!!! No sensitivity at all.

There’s more.

Emilie, the creator of Toups and Co Organics, also makes other quality products like lip balm, deodorant and even makeup and baby products!! Or you can try the balm in a few different scents!

My oldest daughter and I use the lavender deodorant daily. I love the smell. And it works. We also love using the baby balm. It’s great for the whole family.

Don’t forget to head over to Toups and Co Organics to check it out for  yourself. Then show her some love by visiting and liking her facebook page.

I just might have to go order more to stock up. This stuff really is “the balm.”

After you try it come back and let me know what you think. I have a feeling you’re going to love it!

Don't let the dry winter weather take its toll on delicate or sensitive skin. Toups and Co Organics Tallow balm is safe, natural and effective for the whole family.

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway!

Take one simple step towards better health this year by updating your health and beauty routine. I’m so excited to share my Cheshire Fields review and giveaway of some amazing products!

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

I am working with Cheshire Fields to blog about these products. I have been compensated for my time commitment to review these products. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

Just about everyone is on the lookout for simple ways to improve their health. Especially as the new year starts.

I’m not big on diets or spending a lot of money to feel good. I don’t know about you but I also don’t have a lot of extra time to learn to make my own health and beauty products.

But I do love when there are affordable, homemade, high quality products that are in line with my views on health.

I recently got to sample some products from my friend Michelle at Cheshire Fields. She has an assortment of handmade soaps, shampoos, balms, sprays and more that are 100% natural (and I really mean that…not just labeled organic or using the term natural without much meaning behind it).

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

When it comes to natural health and beauty most people jump to coconut oil. It is amazing stuff.

But since I have a toddler with a coconut allergy I try to keep our house pretty much coconut free. That means just about every soap, lotion and shampoo is out.

I was thrilled to find out that Michelle has many products that are not only coconut free but also dairy and nut free! Natural products that are safe for my family. I didn’t think they existed!

Tallow Balm

The first product I tried as soon as it arrived was the tallow balm.

I haven’t been able to use lotion in over a year! A year!! Can you say dry skin?

I was thrilled to try the tallow balm and was not disappointed. Just a tiny bit goes a long way and creates soft, smooth skin. Plus it smells so good with all of the essential oils added.

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

I love that it is safe to use on my entire family, even my kids with allergies. It also comes in a compact case that is easy to take wherever you go. We brought it along for all of our holiday travel.

My oldest likes to use it on her hands at bed time and wear socks on her hands (thanks to Michelle’s suggestion!). By morning she has super soft skin again instead of dry, cracked hands.

Sinus Balm

The sinus balm was a Christmas present for my seven year old. That might sound strange to some. But she has struggled with environmental allergies and mouth breathing for years.

Having another natural tool for helping her breathe better at night is a huge blessing.

It is also made with olive oil and is very safe. The scent is pretty strong. But that is how it works.

My son had a stuffy nose the other day and told us he had to breathe with his mouth open. We put some behind his ears and on his neck. He didn’t wake up once in the night!

Disinfectant & Freshener Spray

With young kids in school I don’t have to tell you how excited I am to have a safe disinfectant spray! It is so easy to use. Just shake and spray.

It makes my house smell wonderful (thieves will do that). Plus I can freshen things in a matter of seconds.

No need to use chemicals to clean your house. This spray can be used directly on surfaces to get rid of the germs.

I was so glad to have it around after my daughter had the flu. It has also come in very handy for the potty seat that sits in our bathroom. It is almost impossible to keep that clean and free of bad smells. The freshener spray worked wonderfully.

Tea Tree + Lavender Freshener

The tea tree + lavender spray is one of Michelle’s new products. It is similar to the disinfectant spray, but with different oils.

I can’t decide which one I like better. The tea tree and lavender combination is very floral and leaves the whole house smelling bright and fresh. I will be using both all winter long!

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Itch Relief Remedy

When you have a child with eczema there is a never ending search for products to help calm the itching. So I was very excited to get to try this.

It comes as a powder that you can make into a paste. It has a very mild scent and soothing ingredients. Just a pinch goes a long way so this will last a long time.

Chamomile Lavender Dry Shampoo

I wash my hair every day. Otherwise my hair gets so oily. It is fine and thin.

When Michelle told me about her dry shampoo I was so excited. I can actually get by without washing my hair once in a while with this product. Simply rub it into the scalp to absorb oil. Plus it smells amazing!

For those mornings where my little one just doesn’t want to sleep and let me take a shower this dry shampoo is a life saver! I can leave the house without feeling like I look unshowered. It is even great for days that I wear my hair down. By afternoon it already looks greasy. Just a bit of dry shampoo and I’m looking good again and smelling good too!

The chamomile lavender is great for light colored hair like mine. There is another one specifically for dark hair.

I was so impressed with all of these Cheshire Fields products. I even bought a bunch for Christmas presents for the women in my family! But you don’t have to wait until Christmas. They make great gifts any time of year.

Plus this is just a small sample of all of the great products Michelle has to offer. She is so passionate about sharing homemade, natural products.

Cheshire Fields Review and Giveaway | Just Take A Bite

Michelle has generously offered to give away a hair care bundle to one of my lovely readers. It includes:

  • Henna Shampoo Bar
  • Hair Oil
  • Dry Shampoo (you choose light or dark)

I don’t know about you, but I could use some serious hair pampering this year!

Can’t wait to see if you’re the winner? Head over to Cheshire Fields right now and use the code MYNEWYEAR to get 10% off your whole order all month long!

I hope you check out all of the Cheshire Fields products. Come back and let me know what looks good or what you’ve tried.

My Simple Mommy Style | Just Take A Bite

My Simple Mommy Style

I don’t know much about style, but I’m sharing my simple mommy style today. It’s all me. prAna and Stonyfield are helping too! There is even a giveaway!

My Simple Mommy Style | Just Take A Bite

I am working with Stonyfield and prAna for this post. I have been compensated for my time commitment. But the opinions and ideas are my own. I have not been paid to post positive reviews.

It is almost comical for me to use this post title.

Style? Me? Ha!

I don’t really have one. Unless comfort is a style. In all seriousness, I like to keep things simple.

Which is why I was so excited when prAna wanted to join forces with Stonyfield for this #JustBeYou campaign.

Comfortable clothes that are actually stylish!

Now we’re talking.

It was hard to choose just one item to try. But I went with the Kara Jeans. I have the hardest time finding pants that fit (without having to shop in the juniors section), that I can move in and that are age appropriate (old college clothes aren’t really cutting it anymore in my mid 30’s!).

It doesn’t take much effort to put them to the test at my house. With three young kids I spend half of my day on the floor playing, picking up toys, changing diapers, etc.

I really love these pants! They let me move, and they are super cute. They work well with flip flops or boots (perfect for the ever changing Michigan weather). I can wear them to church or just working around the house.

My Simple Mommy Style | Just Take A Bite

I actually wore them the entire day – morning until bed time. Normally half of my day is spent in “comfy” pants. You know, the ones you wouldn’t leave the house in but you put them on the minute you get home.

The prAna Kara jeans fit my simple mommy style perfectly.

I like all things simple. My decor. My clothes. My food. Simple.

I like my yogurt the same way. My absolute favorite flavor is vanilla, like the new Oh My Yog! Madagascar vanilla bean. Add some granola and I’m good to go for any meal. I could eat it all day long.

I’ve been dairy free for a little over a year now while nursing my youngest with a dairy allergy. One of the first things I’ll be eating when she’s done nursing is vanilla yogurt!

My lifestyle is simple too. I am such a homebody. We are pretty busy with the kids’ activities and school drop off and pick up. But I’d be content to stay home every single day.

What would I do? Read books and color. For real.

Comfy pants, a stack of books, creative coloring and delicious vanilla yogurt.

It’s my dream day. It’s me! Simple life spending time with my favorite people – my kids.

I chose dark green pants. I don’t have any green pants. I thought I’d be “bold.” Plus they hide stains pretty well when I spill on myself in the kitchen or when little hands and faces wipe food all over me. Both happen way too often.

PrAna clothing is super cute and comfortable. But it is also sustainable! Check out their story.

How about you? What is your style? What does a dream day look like for you?

prAna wants to help you #JustBeYou

They are giving away one item (up to a $99 value!!) to one of my readers!

The giveaway is only open for one week. So be sure to get your entry in!

I’ll warn you, though, it will be hard to pick just one thing! I need to do more browsing to add to my Christmas list.

In case you want to buy more or are ready to start your Christmas shopping you can get 15% off with the coupon code JBYF15HDAP. It is good through December 15, 2015.

Gluten Free Pumpkin Flax Granola Muffins | Just Take A Bite

Gluten Free Pumpkin Flax Granola Muffins

Can’t decide what to have for breakfast? Get your cereal and bread all in one with gluten free pumpkin flax granola muffins. They are the perfect way to start your day this fall.

Gluten Free Pumpkin Flax Granola Muffins | Just Take A Bite

I am working with Stonyfield and Nature’s Path for this post. I have been compensated for my time commitment. But the opinions and ideas are my own. I have not been paid to post positive reviews.

It’s no secret. I L-O-V-E granola. Really I love cereal of any kind.

But cereal is a rare commodity around here, only showing up on the breakfast menu when I have time to make some. Most cereal is just not healthy.

My kids enjoy my homemade granola. I make a kettle corn version that everyone goes crazy for.

But it sure is nice to get variety once in a while. And to give myself a break (it’s hard work cooking for a family with so many different allergies!)

So I was excited to try two products from Nature’s Path – Pumpkin flax granola and Cranberry Vanilla Qia.

Gluten Free Pumpkin Flax Granola Muffins | Just Take A Bite

Big helpers.

Since I can’t have either my big kids gladly volunteered to be the taste testers!

Both kids really loved the Qia. It is a unique blend of seeds and dried fruit. We tried it in both milk and yogurt. Either way is great. Just mix and let it sit for five minutes. Breakfast is served.

My oldest was the granola sampler (since my son is allergic to some of the ingredients). She gave it two thumbs up!

She even got an extra special treat one day with an Oh My Yog! yogurt and pumpkin flax granola in her lunch.

From a flavor standpoint both products are winners.

Gluten Free Pumpkin Flax Granola Muffins | Just Take A Bite

My kids reviewed the taste. I reviewed the ingredients.

I was disappointed to see soy oil in the granola. We try to avoid all soy. I also am not sure what oat syrup solids are. It sounds a lot like corn syrup solids, just using a different grain.

I was hopeful as I read the ingredient list of the Qia cereal. Until I got to the last one – natural vanilla flavor.

Gluten Free Pumpkin Flax Granola Muffins | Just Take A Bite

Natural flavor is my biggest pet peeve when it comes to “natural” products.

Natural flavor is pretty much the same thing as artificial flavor.

They may start with different ingredients, but the end product is about the same. And they impact my children the same way.

Both make my kids C-R-A-Z-Y.

Preparation is key.

I also think that seeds and grains need to be properly prepared to avoid nutrient deficiencies and to aid in digestion. Eating all of these oats and seeds that haven’t been soaked can be hard on the gut. My son seemed to have a really hard time with the seeds and had some off tummy days.

So I did let my kids try both products. But they are not items I would let them have regularly.

Pumpkin flax granola is good for those times when you are traveling or for those days here and there when you really have no time at all to prepare breakfast.

It also makes a great addition to muffins! Especially if you can’t have eggs.

Gluten Free Pumpkin Flax Granola Muffins | Just Take A Bite

Flax seed is a great egg substitute.

So I used the pumpkin flax flavor of the granola and bumped it up with real pumpkin and flax seeds to create gluten free egg free pumpkin flax granola muffins.

A little sprinkle of granola on top adds a nice crunch and burst of flavor.

Since I like to prepare my grains I used Stonyfield whole milk yogurt to soak the flour first. The yogurt not only breaks down the phytic acid, it also helps bind the muffins and give them a soft texture.

You can make the muffins with or without the granola added. I made some without for my son and he still loved them.

Pumpkin and flax are a great pair. Put them in a muffin and you have a great fall breakfast. Make a big batch to stock the freezer for easy weekday mornings.

Are you a cereal fan? Or do muffins top your list?

Why not put them together and enjoy some pumpkin flax granola muffins. Use pumpkin flax granola or your favorite homemade granola for a new twist on breakfast.

I am working with ecocentric mom to blog about this mom + baby box. I have been compensated for my time commitment to review this product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

It can be hard to navigate the world of natural products. Especially when it comes to your baby. That’s why I love getting my ecocentric mom + baby box. Especially in this season of life where I’ve got three young children and just don’t have time to research and shop all day long.

Piyo Piyo Bendable Fork and Spoon Set

“Piyo Piyo’s products have always been developed with little children in mind. Named after the sound of a duckling, Piyo Piyo puts quality, safety, functionality and appeal at the forefront of all their products. They are not only BPA and Phthalate free but also environmentally friendly and durable. The two-piece Piyo Piyo Duckling Bendable Spoon and Fork Set is fun and allows your child to eat right-handed or left-handed. The kids will really love them and you’ll love the convenience. Stick them in your bag and use them on the go or at home. They’re simple and reliable and a great go to choice for your little one’s needs.”

Seriously. How cute are these utensils?! My daughter LOVES them. I love that they are bendable and are great for left-handed kids…which I somehow ended up with three of (my husband and I are both right-handed).

I was worried at first that the fork wouldn’t be very functional. But I was quite surprised with how well it works. My fourteen-month old uses it for just about any kind of food. And the food stays on even when she flings the fork around.

This would make a great Christmas gift for little ones. Especially when you are trying to come up with non-toy ideas if you have a house like mine that is already packed.

Of course I love that they are BPA and phthalate free. Always a must! Grab a set now with this coupon code.

Piyo Piyo Travel Wipes

“Piyo Piyo Pure Water Baby Wipes are gentle to use on your baby’s delicate skin and ideal for diaper changes, feedings and cleaning up everyday messes. These wipes contain only purified water, plant extracts, and moisturizing agents and are free of chlorine, alcohol, parabens, SLES and dyes. They’re safe and easy to use and you can trust that what you’re putting on your baby’s sweet skin is good for them and beneficial. They’re great to have around the house or in your diaper bag so that when duty calls, you’re ready!”

I use cloth diapers 90% of the time. So I don’t need packaged wipes often. But when we are out and about I sometimes use disposable. And it sure is handy to have wipes on hand at all times.

After my daughter’s allergy diagnosis I started reading labels more carefully. I was amazed at the junk used in conventional wipes. Is it really necessary to use parabens to wipe your child’s bottom?!

I was excited to try these water baby wipes from Piyo Piyo. They work well plus they are much safer. I also like how handy the travel pack is for tossing in the diaper bag.

My only complaint is that they do not list all of the ingredients. And with a child with tons of allergies (including coconut) that is an important factor. “Plant extracts” and “moisturizing agents” don’t mean much to me. I need to know details. And it concerns me when companies don’t make that information available.

Acure Organic Baby Fix-it Stick

“ACURE was founded on sustainable principles and sensible prices to steer people away from toxic chemicals. They prove that you don’t have to sacrifice your health for beautiful skin and hair. Their plant + food based formulas are perfected to provide optimal performance at a cellular level. We all know it’s not enough to be natural, it also has to work. Your baby fix-it sticks will soothes ‘ouchies’, with the benefits of pumpkin, borage + pomegranate oils. It’s a great natural alternative remedy.”

Kids are always getting cuts and scrapes…except when you have to try out a fix-it stick! I didn’t get to actually try this on any ouchies because by some miracle my kids didn’t have any. But I am very excited to try it when they do.

I love seeing a product with a list of ingredients I 100% approve. As usual I can’t use it on my youngest because it contains coconut oil. But it will be perfect for my older kids. I think they will really enjoy it too. They can even apply it themselves. It’s like chapstick for your knees.

It does rub on easily and is very handy to keep in the diaper bag.

Love Child Organics Super Blends Pouch

“Love Child Organics makes delicious, nutritionally-focused organic food and snacks for babies and young children. They ensure that you will not find refined sugars, additives, preservatives or fillers in any of their products. Your Super Blends pouch is a tasty and nutritious organic puree and is perfect as a meal for your baby and as a snack for young children. They’re convenient and easy to use and great for the busy mom who wants her kids to eat well.”

My kids don’t get many convenience foods. They are expensive and usually have ingredients I don’t like (especially my big pet peeve “natural flavor.”). You can imagine their excitement when we got a super blends pouch to try.

My youngest is allergic to some of the ingredients. Though it would be perfect for a child her age. My older kids each tried some. In terms of flavor they thought it was so-so. I squeezed some into a dish and added a touch of honey. They liked it better that way (and my kids aren’t too picky about that stuff/don’t need a lot of sweetener).

The one thing that stood out to me was the use of acerola powder for the vitamin C! You don’t see that very often. Usually it’s ascorbic acid, which does the opposite of boost your vitamin C levels.

I give this two thumbs up for convenience and quality. My kids thought it was so-so on flavor. But I think younger kids would love it.

The only thing I wasn’t crazy about was the quinoa added. Seeds are hard for young children to digest, especially if not properly soaked and cooked. Just the fruits and veggies would be my preference.

Ellovi Mint Chocolate Butter Mini

“Mint and chocolate — the perfect combination for dessert and an even better combination for your skin! These Butter Minis can be lightly rubbed or thickly slathered all over your body — anywhere you need moisture and a light, delicious fragrance. They smell like dessert and feel like heaven! It’s time to indulge, ladies!

Many of Ellovi’s products double, triple, and quadruple as other effective solutions, and their Butter Minis are no different. Ellovi totally gets that your skin is like a sponge and that adverse environments can be just as damaging to our bodies as what we put in them. The body butters are also sunscreens, makeup removers, and face moisturizers. You’ll love Ellovi’s natural formulations and will definitely feel the difference in your baby-soft skin.”

I’m jealous…so jealous that my kids get to use this! Really, I just want to eat it. This mint chocolate butter smells so good you want to eat a spoonful. And with quality ingredients you probably actually could.

My big kids loved having me rub this on their arms and legs. It really helped when my son was having an eczema flair. I sure didn’t mind having my kids smell like dessert!

This is another product that I would totally use over and over. It would be handy to keep in the diaper bag for dry skin in the winter or if you or your child struggles with eczema. Or simply use it to smell good with the benefit of soft skin.

Mint chocolate butter is also a great idea for a Christmas gift or stocking stuffer. Stock up now while you can get 15% off!

Lasting Smiles Cares Lip Balm

“As avowed chapstick junkies, many of us were delighted to discover Lasting Smiles Lip Balms. You’ll never use a cheap, waxy chapstick again after smoothing on the light, silky texture of these balms. They’re formulated with ultra-nourishing ingredients that’ll keep your smile glowing all day. My oldest is seven…going on thirteen. She was very excited when I told her she got to use this lip balm. The pomegranate scent is divine. The balm goes on easily.

Whether mom gets it or you want to use it on your kids, this is a fun product. Great smell, quality ingredients and yet another item to keep in the diaper bag or your purse. Or keep one in each child’s backpack to use at school.

These make great stocking stuffers and teacher gifts too.

Enjoy Life Foods Seed and Fruit Mix

“Enjoy Life Foods is committed to providing consumers with gluten and allergen free foods of the highest quality. In addition to being free of the eight most common allergens, Enjoy Life products are also certified Kosher and Halal, are all natural, and non-GMO verified. They manufacture a wide variety of delicious snacks too! The Mountain Mambo seed and fruit mix is made with sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds (pepitas), fruit and mini chocolate chips. Your body will love you once you introduce this delicious snack plus you won’t feel guilty because you’re eating something nutritious that tastes amazing. The sample sleeve is a great size to throw in the diaper bag and fortify moms for nursing or toddler-chasing.”

My kids are spoiled. They got to try all of my goodies, including this Enjoy Life seed and fruit mix. My big kids had no problem devouring this delicious snack.

We already use Enjoy Life chocolate chips in our baking and for snacking. So it was fun to try another Enjoy Life product.

My kids will eat anything with dried fruit and seeds. Add chocolate chips and they are all over it.

I like the convenience factor of the individual package. One more thing to add to the diaper bag for a quick snack when you are out and about.

I love the idea of using it for nursing moms. We need all the help we can get for nutritious food with no work involved!

Stuffy Noses, Tangled Hair and Allergies: A Natural Remedies Review

When the cold or flu hits, when allergies flare or when kids can’t settle down don’t reach for a pill. Instead try some simple natural remedies.

Natural Remedies Review | Just Take A Bite

When it comes to natural remedies I am definitely a novice.

I know food backwards and forwards. But herbs, oils and spices? Salves and tinctures? Come again?

Keep it simple.

You can imagine my delight when I flipped through Natural Remedies for Kids and saw just how easy it is to make so many natural treatments at home!

And I really do mean easy. Because if they weren’t I would have just put the book back down.

Natural Remedies is so easy to follow and find what you need. The advice is practical and straight forward.

Easy tips.

There are common sense tips like braiding long hair to keep it from getting tangled at night. Yes, I used that one immediately on my daughter! Then there is no need for any detangler (though if you need one there is a recipe for it).

Natural Remedies Review | Just Take A Bite

Allergy treatments.

I have talked a lot about my daughter’s environmental allergies and struggles with clogged sinuses. Natural Remedies has an easy recipe for allergy syrup that is on my to-do list.

In the mean time we’re trying nettle tea. I had no idea it was so good for allergies.

There is really some kind of remedy for just about every common concern. It includes respiratory ailments, colds, flu, skin and hair issues, bumps and bruises and even emotional problems (like hyperactivity and anxiety).

Natural Remedies Review | Just Take A Bite

Start small.

I am slowly building my supply for my natural medicine cabinet, starting with some of the more common and cheaper ingredients (like turmeric and nettle leaf). I will gradually add on as I become more familiar with and more comfortable with natural remedies.

One of the things that I love so much about finally going down this path (aside from the fact that it was one of my goals for this year that had been going by the wayside) is that I can make things that are safe for my youngest. Pretty much all OTC medications (both conventional and natural/homeopathic) contain some form of palm or coconut.

Natural Remedies Review | Just Take A Bite

Save money.

You can still get Natural Remedies for Kids at a discount price right now. I’d snatch it up! This will be my go-to resource this winter.

And if you have a child like mine that is a sponge and loves to read anything and everything let them take a look and learn right along with you!

Natural Remedies for Kids is a resource that will benefit the entire family and help promote a natural lifestyle and overall health. If you are new to natural remedies or just looking to expand your knowledge this book is for you.

I am not one to buy nail polish…ever. Because I never paint my nails. Especially since I have to do mouth exercises on my little one. I don’t want nail polish in her mouth!

But when I got this super fun blue nail polish I had to try it right away. My daughter and I both painted our toe nails.

It went on very easily!! Just one coat stayed on for quite a while. In fact, I’m still wearing it.

The fun thing about Square Hue is that, just like ecocentric mom, they send you a box with fun new colors every month! You can change up your nail color  year round.

Elektra Magnesium Cream

Elektra Magnesium Cream is a Luxurious Anti-Ageing Cream that is a blend of natural plant butters and oils infused with magnesium to keep your skin supple and hydrated. This moisturizer and supplement combo is great for massage and healthy skin. This cream is available in Zest-Citrus, Herbal or Island Spice scents. It is free of parabens, petrochemical or animal ingredients.

I did try a small amount of the magnesium cream. It goes on so smoothly and rubs right in. I love that it does not burn your skin like magnesium oil often does.

It also comes in two great scents.

I wish I could have used it more to see the full benefit, but it does contain coconut oil. And since my little one is climbing on me all day long I can’t let her touch it.

But this is for sure a great way to get your daily magnesium since you can absorb it through your skin.

Product Pricing: $18.99 for 100g bottle, 20g included

Ground 2 Table

Ground 2 Table Spice was conceived as a portal into a true sustainable lifestyle. You are about to experience the beginning of an expanding product line designed to optimize the culinary experience. To start, our organic, blended spices are salt-free, sugar-free, and have no GMOs. Come visit us at G2T.com and help us create the gateway to a healthier world.

When it comes to spices my kitchen is pretty boring. With lots of allergies and one child with oral SPD I stick to just a few herbs and spices for our cooking.

So it was a fun treat to receive the Ground 2 Table seasoning packets.

The one my family really loved was the cinnamon spice blend. I added it to apple slices.

I also used it to make delicious apple spice ice cream! (Note – the recipe is coming…be on the lookout.)

The other spice blends were a bit too “spicy” for my daughter. But my husband really loved them. The all purpose seasoning worked well in our chili.

The only thing I didn’t like about the spice blends was that all of the ingredients weren’t listed on the packets. They are on the website, though. I couldn’t try them due to allergens.

These come in really handy for quick meal prep. No need to take ten spice jars out of the cupboard! And I love that they are in individual size packets. Just pour one packet on and  you’re done.

Product Pricing: $1.99 for 5 to 8 gram packet, 3 included

Branch to Nature THYME Facial Astringent with MSM.

This signature THYME collection is naturally formulated to cleanse all skin types. Feel clean but not dry when washing your face. All products are sulfate free and paraben free.

I really liked the facial astringent. You can feel it working right away!

I was disappointed to see polysorbate 20 on the ingredient list. That is another coconut derived ingredient. So it’s not something I can use regularly right now.

Product Pricing: $15.50 for 3.5 fl oz, travel size included, $14.95 for 4 piece THYME Collection Sample Kit

Vance

Vance Family Soy Candles began with the mission to provide the perfect, sustainable candle. The wicks are low-smoke cotton, and the containers are made in the USA with recycled glass. They use pure essential oils and organic flavor oils to create amazing hand crafted candles. Their aromatic boutique tumbler candle makes a lovely bath or dinner candle.

The Vance soy candle has a mild, pleasant smell. And the glass container is very cute.

I did not, however, burn the candle. We generally try to avoid soy. So I didn’t feel right about burning a soy candle.

Earthwise Beauty hand makes incredibly effective organic skin care products that feel like food for your skin. This relies on a wonderful synergy of a trio of carefully selected oils, along with a few essential oils chosen for their broad-range skin-rejuvenating, firming, brightening, and anti-inflammatory topical effects.

I do my best to try all of the products I receive at least a little. But since there is so much coconut and palm in this facial oil I couldn’t use it (due to my nursing daughter’s allergies). Even without trying it I love that it has safe ingredients. And I bet the orange feels great on your face!

Boom Chicka a Pop

Snacking is the best part about life. It should be both DELICIOUS and carefree. That’s why Angie’s set out to make a light, tasty treat that satisfies without triggering post-snack guilt. ALWAYS SIMPLE, ALWAYS REAL, free of gluten and preservatives. And because it’s made by Angie’s, it’s a SUPERSTAR combo of salty and sweet.

We have been buying Boom Chick a Pop products for a few years now. But I don’t think we’ve had the salty sweet flavor. If I can find a product that does not contain refined sweeteners, artificial flavors or even natural flavors I get pretty excited.

I was particularly excited to try this salty sweet popcorn because I have had a corn intolerance for a few years. But lately I seem to do ok with some. So I got to try popcorn!!!

Let me tell you, it was so delicious! I am a huge fan of salty sweet combinations (like my salted dark chocolate ice cream or my kettle corn granola). I also love crunchy snacks. So this was the perfect treat. I was kind of sad I only had a small bag. If my local store carries this flavor I may be in trouble.

And for what it’s worth I did share my little bag with my daughter. She really loved it too!

Available in 1 and 6 oz bags at a retailer near you

Crockpot Sprouted Orca Bean and Squash Chili | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Crockpot Sprouted Orca Bean and Squash Chili

Put a new spin on your usual chili by adding Bob’s Red Mill orca beans to create sprouted orca bean and squash chili. Pair it with freshly baked corn bread for a hearty week night dinner.

Crockpot Sprouted Orca Bean and Squash Chili | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

I am partnering with Bob’s Red Mill and Stonyfield for this post. I have been compensated for my time commitment to use these products. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

There is nothing quite like a bowl of hot chili on a cool fall day. You can add lots of vegetables, make it extra meaty, spice it up or keep it mild.

I’ve made chili many ways. The possibilities are endless.

Try something new.

But one thing I have never added to my chili is orca beans! In fact I had never heard of them until recently.

Bob’s Red Mill orca beans are so fun. They look like mini orca whales with the black and white exterior. What kid wouldn’t love to have whales swimming around in her chili?!

Crockpot Sprouted Orca Bean and Squash Chili | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

A lot to love about beans.

One of the things about orca beans that stood out to me right away was the nutrition content. They have lots of fiber, protein, folate, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and zinc. Talk about packing a punch!

Just be sure to sprout your beans first to make them easier to digest and to make the vitamins and minerals available. That means thinking ahead to start the beans the day before you make chili. But it only takes about thirty seconds to get them sprouting.

The other unique thing about this chili is the pureed squash. It adds thickness and a hint of sweetness. Combine that with tomatoes, onions, peppers, zucchini, broth and your choice of beef or chicken. Dinner is served!

Crockpot Sprouted Orca Bean and Squash Chili | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Top it. Pair it.

Sprouted orca bean and squash chili can be eaten as is or you can add a variety of toppings. We like to add grated cheese and avocado. Another delicious addition is Stonyfield plain yogurt. It cools down the spice and adds a creaminess to the chili.

Of course you can’t just have a bowl of chili. Sprouted orca bean and squash chili is great served on noodles or rice.

But our favorite way to eat it is paired with cornbread! You can make traditional cornbread. Or if you have corn allergies like we do try my corn free cornbread. You’ll never know the difference.

Crockpot Sprouted Orca Bean and Squash Chili | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Eat it now, eat it later.

Load up the crockpot with a big batch of chili. Serve it for dinner and pack up the leftovers for school lunches. Simply heat it in the morning, and it will stay warm in a thermos. Spread a generous helping of butter on leftover cornbread. It doesn’t get much easier or tastier!

Chili also freezes well. So you can keep some on hand in the freezer for an easy lunch or dinner.

My kids love orca beans. They are great in chili or cooked and eaten plain. Give them a try and see what your kids think. Then add them to sprouted orca bean and squash chili. They won’t be able to pass up killer whales in their soup!

Looking for a new, easy dinner this fall? Crockpot sprouted orca bean and squash chili is perfect any night of the week.

Creamy Sprouted Red Lentil and Sausage Stew | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Creamy Sprouted Red Lentil and Sausage Stew

Start the school year with nutrient dense creamy sprouted red lentil and sausage stew. It is full of broth, vegetables and protein for a great lunch or dinner.

I am partnering with Bob’s Red Mill and Stonyfield for this post. I have been compensated for my time commitment to use these products. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

Ready or not, summer is over. The holiday has come and gone. It is back to school time for everyone.

It is also time for the weather to turn cooler and the days to be shorter.

After hot summer days it is time to return to a warm bowl of soup, freshly baked bread and hot apple cider.

Creamy Sprouted Red Lentil and Sausage Stew | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Soup is the perfect fall food. It is comforting and warm. But it will also help boost your immune system if you include lots of homemade bone broth. Just what you need for warding off illnesses in the fall.

You can go the traditional route with chicken noodle and beef vegetable soup. Or maybe spruce it up a bit with squash or split pea.

But I’ve got a new soup for you that the whole family will love. The really great thing is that it is easy to make and packed with nutrients.

Creamy Sprouted Red Lentil and Sausage Stew | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

It starts with lentils.

Sprouted red lentil and sausage stew starts with Bob’s Red Mill red lentils. They contain lots of fiber, protein and iron. It is important to sprout them first for easier digestion and absorption of nutrients. It will also allow them to cook very quickly.

If you’ve never sprouted lentils it is so easy. Just put warm water over them. That’s pretty much all there is to it.

Now add bone broth, sausage and vegetables to these colorful lentils and you’ve got an amazing soup that comes together in no time.

Looking to add even more nutrition? Toss your favorite greens in during the last few minutes of cooking (I like spinach). Then top it all off with some plain Stonyfield yogurt for creaminess and healthy fat.

Your kids will love it.

Are you worried your kids won’t be willing to try lentils? No need for concern. The lentils cook down and virtually disappear into the soup. It just looks like sausage and vegetables. But the lentils will give the soup a great texture and thickness. They make it really filling.

Creamy Sprouted Red Lentil and Sausage Stew | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Great for lunch or dinner.

You’ll want to make a big batch of sprouted red lentil and sausage stew. Have it for dinner one night. Then pack the leftovers in lunches. Simply warm it on the stove for a  minute in the morning and pack it in a thermos.

This stew also freezes well. So you can make a double batch to eat some now and freeze a meal for another busy week night or easy lunches later on.

Red lentil and sausage stew is filling enough to be your whole meal. But we like some variety. So I serve it with crackers and cheese, bread with jam or a delicious sweet bread like pumpkin, zucchini or winter spice.

Have you ever had red lentils? Are you ready to try some?

Whether you’re new to lentils or they are a staple in your pantry, this creamy sprouted red lentil and sausage stew needs to be on your menu this fall.

Made To Matter With Target and Stonyfield: My Daily Moments | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Made To Matter With Target and Stonyfield: My Daily Moments

I am partnering with Target and Stonyfield in the Made To Matter Campaign. I think we should make each day matter with the choices we make for our families and our environment.

I have been compensated for my time commitment to use these products. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.

Made To Matter With Target and Stonyfield: My Daily Moments | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Have you heard of the Made To Matter campaign? Companies like Target and Stonyfield are doing their part to give consumers better choices of products and food. In turn we can make our own moments that matter.

My daily moments.

I make a lot of choices every single day as I try to raise healthy kids. Sometimes it is about feeding them nourishing food. Sometimes it is about teaching them how to take care of God’s creation.

Then there are times when I have to make choices about their health and well-being.

I have also heard from many moms lately that they want to make good choices but find it hard when they are so bombarded with junk food and chemicals everywhere they go. We all really do want our choices to matter.

Taking care of my baby.

If you’ve been around very long you know that I’ve had a challenging year with my youngest. We have struggled to figure out why she hardly ate for months.

Sometimes she would scream. All of her feedings were so short.

We finally figured out she  has a lot of food allergies and have worked to eliminate the problem foods.

That’s not all.

On top of that she has tongue and lip ties. We have now had them clipped twice to improve her ability to nurse and eat solid food.

Her second clipping was just a few weeks ago. On top of the procedure she was cutting her one year molars. Needless to say she was in pain. She was hardly sleeping either (sometimes taking three hours to get to sleep).

Due to her allergies we can’t use traditional pain medications. They all contain palm-derived ingredients. We tried a few different things without much luck.

Finally we tried Hyland’s Teething Tablets*. What a life saver!!

There was one time I was trying to get her settled for a nap. She just cried and cried. I finally remembered the teething tablets. She was asleep in about sixty seconds (this in not an exaggeration).

We both finally got a little bit of calm and rest in a chaotic time.

Made To Matter companies and products.

There are lots of great companies joining the Made To Matter campaign. One of them is Justin’s. We got to sample some Justin’s almond butter, chocolate hazelnut spread and peanut butter cups**.

My kids were so excited to have these treats! I was very excited that my son could actually eat them all. He had never tried a peanut butter cup before.

Both of my kids liked the chocolate hazelnut spread the best (think healthier version of Nutella®).

We also love the SheaMoisture shampoo***. I use it for my seven year old’s hair. I LOVE the smell.

Another brand I use is Yes To. I like their shampoo!

That’s not all.

Many of the brands joining in the Made To Matter campaign are creating exclusive products just for Target. This includes Stonyfield.

Stonyfield’s new products have just been released. Super Seeds yogurt has softened flax seeds while Super Grains yogurt contains buckwheat and quinoa. They sound delicious!!

Stonyfield is committed to offering quality, organic products. We love using their whole milk plain yogurt. Stonyfield’s new Oh My Yog! is amazing as well.

I couldn’t finish a post about Target without mentioning their support of breastfeeding moms! Their policy is that you can nurse your baby anywhere in the store. How awesome is that?! You don’t have to hide in a dirty bathroom stall to feed your child. I wish there were more companies like Target that truly supported a healthy lifestyle.

We can all make our lives matter simply by choosing quality products that support health and sustainability.

Have you had any moments that matter lately? What are some of your favorite natural products?

Made To Matter With Target and Stonyfield: My Daily Moments | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

*Please note that Hyland’s Teething Tablets do contain a small amount of lactose. For this reason I only use them when we absolutely need them since my daughter can’t have dairy. In some cases the benefit of the pain relief outweighs the reaction to the lactose.

**All of the Justin’s products we tried contain palm fruit oil. So even though my family loved them I’m not sure I would buy the product due to my daughter’s palm allergy. I don’t really like to have it in the house/have my big kids getting it on anything.

***SheaMoisture does contain coconut oil. So avoid it if you have a coconut allergy. I do not use it on my infant because of this.
