Category: Food allergies

Does one (or all!) of your children have food allergies? Sadly this is no longer a rare thing. More and more kids struggle with food allergies now than ever before.

I’ve been there too. Skin testing, blood work, epi-pens…the works. It can be challenging or down right scary.

But you don’t have to live in fear. And you don’t have to just accept food allergies as a life sentence. There is help!

My son went from over twenty food allergies and an epi-pen to being able to eat just about anything. Even nuts!

There are ways to heal the gut and nourish the body so your child can get back to a normal life. Food allergies have so many underlying causes. Once you figure out the root problem and treat it the body will begin to heal.

Don’t let food allergies define your life. I’m here to help you and your child heal.

Allergen Friendly Meal Plan Week of 6-28-15

This week’s allergen friendly meal plan is all about family favorites and enjoying fresh summer produce. Plus we’re focusing on much needed rest and splurging with one meal out!

Allergen Friendly Meal Plan | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Happy 4th of July week!  It’s crazy that we’re heading into July already. Father’s Day was just a week ago and now we’re thinking about the holiday. It seems like summer break just started.

Last week was chaotically busy and stressful with allergy issues, doctor’s appointments, errands and a to-do list a mile long of things that really had to be done.

So this week I’m giving myself a break.

It is inevitable that I will come up with plenty of stuff to do throughout the week. But I’m not scheduling anything to start off. Maybe I can even squeeze in a few naps.

I’ve known for a very long time how important sleep is.  I even explain to my kids that they need lots of sleep so their bodies can heal/repair while they rest. And it’s the area I struggle with the most.  But lately I’ve been reading more and more and more about the importance of sleep. Maybe I should really take it to heart. So I’m hoping to play catch up this week.

Since my mineral analysis I’ve been getting some supplements to try to replenish my body.

But my healing protocol has not been going well.

I started a new multi-vitamin (made specifically for slow oxidizers like me). After a few days of taking it…and a very fussy baby…I realized the vitamin A in it is from PALMitate.  No good with a palm allergy.

I had to cancel my order for a vitamin A supplement because that too is from palmitate.

Then I started a new probiotic and a different brand of HCL. I was left with a screaming baby that wouldn’t nurse.  I have yet to figure out which one caused the problem. But I’m giving it a week or so to try either of them again.

Then I bought a box of cereal for my oldest as a special treat. We only eat boxed cereal about once a year. It only has four ingredients and is made with rice. So I figured she and I could both eat. After munching on it during the day I re-read the label…and realized it too contains vitamin A from palmitate.  And we’re back to fussy baby that is in pain, has a swollen tongue, can’t eat and doesn’t sleep well. Three times in one week! My poor baby girl. I had to take a lot of activated charcoal this week to help ease things.

So I’m pretty much back where I started…taking nothing.

In a week or two I’ll try the probiotic again at a very very low dose and see what happens. And I’m going to try adding more liver to my diet to get vitamin A. Then after a bit I’ll try the HCL again.Allergen Friendly Meal Plan | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

As you can see we all need some rest, stress reduction and healing foods in our allergen friendly meal plan for this week.

I’m planning on lots of broth and vegetables.

Last week I posted recipes for strawberry lemon jello salad (if you haven’t made it yet you should!!) and strawberry apple salad.  Plus I shared my latest ecocentric mom box review. Check it out!

If you are looking for 4th of July recipes look under my holiday recipes. I’ve got some fun ones like red, white and blue swirl ice cream and red, white and blue parfaits.  Plus cherry season is starting. Check out the cherry recipes like cherry pie, cherry cobbler and double cherry ice cream.

Finally on to the menu. Here is the allergen friendly meal plan for this week. Lots of family favorites (very kid friendly!) and in-season produce are on the menu.  What are you eating this week? Is it a busy week or do you have time to catch up on sleep? Happy 4th of July!

Strawberry Apple Salad | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Strawberry Apple Salad

Strawberry apple salad is a simple way to add a burst of strawberry flavor to your summer meal.Strawberry Apple Salad | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

I am a planner.  I always make meal plans for the week (I’ve been posting them for several years if you need inspiration!). It’s usually not too difficult to come up with main dishes.

But side dishes…

I struggle there. It usually ends up being the same boring sides week after week. Broccoli, beans, applesauce…

If you’re tired of boring sides you’re in luck.  Today I’ve got a bright, fun, easy side dish that is perfect for any week night meal. It can also be doubled or tripled and served at your next picnic or potluck.

There is no cooking or baking required. Just some chopping and mixing.

Strawberry apple salad features one of summer’s gems – fresh strawberries.  It is naturally very allergen friendly and low in sugar. It puts a fun summer spin on the year round staple of apples.

If you’re like me and don’t need much sweetness to feel like you’re having a treat, strawberry apple salad could even be used as dessert. Top it with a sprinkle of granola or crispy walnuts. Dessert is ready!Strawberry Apple Salad | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

One of the things I love about this salad is that you can prepare it in advance.  The longer you let it sit the better! The apples will just absorb more and more of the strawberry flavor.

I like to let my kids help make this strawberry apple salad.  Even the young ones can get involved. I peel and core the apples. Then they use a dull knife to cut the apples into chunks. After I blend the strawberry dressing they can pour it on the apples and mix.

Of course if your child helps make the salad you have to let them be a taste tester.  That is the most important job! My kids sure loved sampling strawberry apple salad.

Strawberry apple salad is the perfect park snack.

Fill half pint mason jars with the salad and put a lid on. Grab a spoon and you’re all set. No need to worry about messy hands since you eat it with a spoon.

Whether it is strawberry season or not you can make strawberry apple salad. Frozen strawberries work too!  No apples on hand? No problem. Swap pears, peaches or plums. It’ll still taste great.

Put strawberry apple salad on your menu this week. I bet your kids will love it as much as mine do!Strawberry Apple Salad | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

ecocentric mom: June Mom Box Review

We may have just celebrated Father’s Day, but it is always a good time to celebrate moms! A mom box from ecocentric mom is the perfect way to do just that.ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

**I am working with ecocentric mom to blog about this mom box. I have been compensated for my time commitment to review this product. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.**

Today I’m back to tell you about another fun ecocentric mom box I received. This one is for moms, and it’s packed with products you can feel good about.

Here is how it works. Ecocentric mom does the hard work for you – finding great products that are natural and healthy. You get a box full of fun stuff to try at a fraction of the cost. It can be a one time event, or you can get a new box every other month.

This month I had an extra challenge doing my review. With my little one’s recent coconut allergy diagnosis I’ve had to stop using any products with coconut…which includes most natural health and beauty products.

But no need to worry. I passed along some of the products I couldn’t use to my family. So you’ll still get to hear a first hand report!

Here are the products in this month’s ecocentric mom box.ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Lillian Eve Nail Polish

Lillian Eve is a mompreneur founded nail polish company committed to living a colorful life. Our nail polishes are vegan, cruelty-free, and toxin-free. Sweet Dreams and Bliss are two of our most popular polishes from our new spring collection, Just Breathe.”

I think I’ve painted my nails once in the last fifteen years…no joke. I had my nails painted for my wedding (13 years ago!) and probably not since then. It’s just not something I like to do since I’m always in the kitchen working with my hands. I don’t want anything toxic in our food! Plus I’ve got little ones that I feed with my hands.

But I do paint my toe nails every so often. I LOVE this color for toe nails (sweet dreams).  It is perfect for someone like me that likes just a hint of color. And being on my toes I shouldn’t have to worry about any ingredients possibly impacting my sensitive little one.ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

My oldest and I tried this nail polish. I had high hopes, but there were a few things I wasn’t crazy about.

  • The nail polish was really runny and started dripping off our nails. I had to be extra careful to only get a small amount on the brush. Our nails ended up looking a bit sloppy.
  • The smell of the polish was very strong/chemical like. Even my son instantly declared, “That stinks!” I could smell it for quite a while after painting my nails…and it was on my feet.
  • The list of ingredients is quite lengthy, and I’m not sure what a lot of it is. Their definition of toxin-free may be different than mine.

That being said they do have a ton of fun colors!  And I’m sure it is safer than what you’d buy at the local drugstore.

Product Pricing: $12 for 0.5 fl oz or 15 ml – No expiration.ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Simply 7 Snacks

“Nature is beautiful and it tastes great! Why mess with perfection? We believe you can balance healthiness with taste to be deliciously wholesome. Simply 7 ensures that every ingredient is not only natural but is SIMPLE. Their 7 core standards are: 0 Grams Trans Fat and No Cholesterol, Gluten-free, All Natural Recipes, No artificial colors or flavors, No Preservatives, Simple Ingredients and Simply Delicious.”

We eat pretty much no packaged food. The only exception I make is having chips once in a while.  I usually buy olive oil potato chips or sweet potato chips.

So I was pretty excited to have some new chips to try. This months ecocentric mom box contained two varieties – hummus chips and quinoa chips.  Both tasted great! I ate the bag of quinoa chips myself…this is a box for mom after all.

My son couldn’t try either variety because they both contain corn (which he is allergic to). My older daughter and my husband sampled the hummus chips (they have dairy, so I couldn’t try them). So it was hit and miss in terms of allergens. But in terms of flavor we loved them.

I love pretty much anything salty and crunchy. The quinoa chips fit the bill perfectly. An added bonus was that the hummus chips were not spicy. That’s a make or break point for my oldest with oral sensory issues.

I would love to try their lentil chips. My son could even eat those. I may have to do some shopping!

If you are looking for a fun snack once in a while Simply 7 Snacks are good options. This was my favorite product in the box!

Product Pricing: Hummus Sea Salt 1oz – $1.00, Quinoa Sea Salt 0.8 oz, $1.00

Goddess Garden

“We created Goddess Garden because our family loves the great outdoors. Unlike traditional chemical sunscreens,  Goddess Garden is safe, effective, biodegradable, and free from harmful chemicals.”

I think Goddess Garden is a really great product with quality ingredients for the times when you need sunscreen. We don’t use sunscreen just for playing outside. We like to soak up our daily vitamin D! But if we go to the beach or know we’ll be out all day then I put it on my kiddos.  We haven’t had a day like that yet this summer. So no sunscreen so far! I will be trying this on the big kids when we head out on vacation soon. It does have coconut, so my little one and I won’t be trying it.

Product Pricing: $14.99-$17.99 for 3.4 oz bottle

Bella Organics

“Vanilla Mint Deodorant Creme: Beauty products are often full of toxic ingredients, especially the conventional deodorants. Bella Organics Vanilla Mint Deodorant Crème is a perfect alternative to a health conscious mom. We offer an organic, aluminum-free deodorant that actually works!”

This is another product I did not get to try because it contains coconut oil. But it smells AMAZING. It smells like a minty dessert. I’d much rather smell like that than sweat!  Vanilla mint deodorant creme is a bit different from other natural deodorants that I’ve tried because it is creamy. I think that would be very soothing to sensitive underarm skin.  It also contains natural ingredients that work with your body. Any deodorant without chemicals or aluminum gets two thumbs up from me. I’m anxious to look into their other products.

Product Pricing: 0.25 ounces for $3.99ecocentric mom june mom box review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Meliora K Laundry Powder

Meliora K‘s Laundry Powder is free of fragrances, dyes, and brighteners. We list every ingredient clearly on the label. Works great in standard and HE washers. Our vision is a clean, happy, and healthy home that doesn’t rely on secret formulas and mysterious chemicals.”

I think I’m starting to sound like a broken record here. This laundry detergent from Meliora K is another product with coconut oil. So I let my mom try it.

After using the laundry powder my mom did a good smell check – no fragrance at all!! That is a very important point for me. I don’t want my clothes smelling like perfume.

She said the clothes and towels she washed were very clean. There weren’t many suds in the washer, but that is the way it should be when you aren’t adding foaming agents to your soap.

The only concern my mom had was that it didn’t seem to dissolve well in cold water. But I think that is the case with most natural powder detergents. You have to dissolve them in warm or hot water first and then switch to cold.

All in all a great product that cleans well, has no fragrance and no chemicals. I wish I could use it!!

Product Pricing: $9.99 for 20 load (40 HE loads) canister, $15.99 for 64 load (128 HE loads) load canister.

Ecocentric Soap

“Treat yourself to a luxurious soap made with all natural ingredients and formulated to soothe, hydrate, exfoliate and nourish your beautiful skin to feel amazing.”

My sister-in-law tried the ecocentric soap. Here is what she had to say:

It really cleanses very well. It took my water resistant eye make up off right away. It did not just smear the make up across my face like some cleansers have done in the past. It actually took it right off. I was really excited about that, but then the sensitive skin under and around my eyes started to burn a little shortly after I finished washing my face. This morning they are still quite sensitive and a little burning, also slightly swollen under my eyes. So I will not be using the soap on my face again, sadly. I don’t have sensitive skin, so this reaction actually really surprises me.

I also used to the soap in the shower. It lathers well and really does cleanse very well. I really enjoy the scent. I tried it on my legs to shave them, to see how it compares to the other coconut oil based bar soap that I buy. It lathers well, so it worked very well to use for shaving my legs. However, my skin was very tight after I was dried off from my shower. I definitely would not be able to go without lotion using this soap.

I would buy the soap again because it really does cleanse well. The ingredients are mostly good. I do wonder about the quality of essential oils they use in the soap. And I love the scent. However, I would use caution on any sensitive areas.”

Product Pricing: $6

This ecocentric mom box contained some really amazing, natural products.

I was sad I couldn’t try some of them. But that’s life with a coconut allergy.

Now I’m craving more Simply 7 chips! I may have to place an order very soon.

Do you like what you what you see? Are you interested in getting a box of great products to try for yourself? Sign up at Ecocentric Mom and see what fun, natural products arrive at your door.

Strawberry Lemon Jello Salad | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Strawberry Lemon Jello Salad

When you see strawberries at the farmer’s market you know summer is here! Use that fresh fruit to kick off the season with this fun strawberry lemon jello salad the whole family will love.

Strawberry Lemon Jello Salad | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

I recall eating a lot of jello growing up.  Of course we had it plain. But we also ate a lot of jello salads.

Church potlucks are notorious for a variety of jello dishes. Some have chunks of fruit. Some are layered. Some are meant to be eaten with your hands. I know I got my fill as a kid!

Jello salads are fruity and fun. Of course kids love them. Who wouldn’t with the bright colors and sweet flavor?

Is Jello Harmful?

It’s been a couple years now since we adopted a strict no food coloring policy in our house.

My children just react way too strongly to artificial colors and flavors.

Plus after researching I realize just how bad all of that artificial stuff is for everyone’s health (think ADHD, hyperactivity, etc.).  I still cringe every time I see a child eating a brightly colored cupcake, cookie or candy. Especially knowing that it is most likely a daily occurrence for them.

So jello out of a box is not something my children ever eat. But I do like to make real jello with nourishing grass-fed gelatin (use code TAKE10 for 10% off).  It is especially fun in the summer.

Strawberry Lemon Jello Salad | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Real Food Strawberry Lemon Jello Salad

Recently I decided I wanted to recreate some of my childhood favorite jello recipes.

I started with this strawberry lemon jello salad. It is actually a combination of two jello salads my mom made.

But this one is made with real fruit, grass-fed gelatin, natural sweeteners, pastured eggs and raw milk!

The first layer is a simple strawberry jello made with fresh berries. The top layer is a bright, lemon pudding.

Together they make an irresistible combination. And check out that color!!! No need for anything artificial when you’ve got quality ingredients with vibrant hues.

The final test is the flavor. My whole family gave it two thumbs up! The strawberry and lemon pair well. The jello is not overly sweet. It is a great combination.

Strawberry lemon jello salad would make a great addition to any summer picnic or potluck!

Are you a jello fan? Treat  yourself and your family to this amazing real food version of a classic. Strawberry lemon jello salad is sure to be a hit.

Allergen Friendly Meal Plans Week of 6-21-15

This week’s allergen friendly meal plans and updates include Father’s Day celebration, pantry stocking and doctor appointments.Allergen Friendly Meal Plans | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Happy Father’s Day! I am blessed to have great God-fearing men in my life (husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, brothers, brothers-in-law). I appreciate each one of them. It’s good to be able to celebrate them all today.

Last week my husband returned from a week in Romania. It’s good to have life back to normal now.

I kept things quite simple while he was gone so I could keep up. But that means now I have twice as much to do this week!  I have to catch up on everything, restock cupboards and clean.Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Unfortunately this week also turns out to be very busy with dentist, doctor, grocery shopping and sports.

We tried rice with my son last week.  He’s had a couple rough days behavior-wise. So I think we’ll keep that out for now. Maybe in a week or two we’ll try avocado. We’re actually getting to the end of his allergy list. There are only a few things left that he has to avoid.

My little one has had quite a few rough days in a row now. I’m hoping she gets back on track this week. She and I could both use better sleep.Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Yesterday my husband and the big kids went strawberry picking.  We’ve already frozen half of them, and I made eleven half pints of pectin-free easy strawberry freezer jam.  We still have to freeze a few more.

So far on my kitchen to-do list I’ve got:

Gluten Free Inside Out Oreos® | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Gluten Free Inside Out Oreos®

This homemade version of gluten free inside out Oreos® is a fun, allergen friendly treat that is perfect for birthdays or Father’s Day.Gluten Free Inside Out Oreos® | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Father’s Day is just around the corner! It’s time celebrate all the special dads in your life.

What is the best way to a man’s heart? Through his stomach of course!  A special dessert is just the thing to show your husband, father or grandfather how much you love him.

Remember to take care of that stomach, though. Don’t serve sweets with artificial ingredients, food coloring and hydrogenated oils. Instead make a homemade dessert that he can’t resist using real ingredients.

Enter gluten free inside out Oreos®. They are both fun and delicious. They will also last a while so your special man can enjoy them the whole week.

The kids can even help make gluten free inside out Oreos®.  You can make them in advance so there is plenty of time to work on them with the kids. Then they will be so proud to give them to dad.

These tasty cookies are also perfect for birthday treats. I recently made them for my son’s cow spotted birthday.

I love how easy they are to make…and how little mess they make when my kids eat them.

Gluten free inside out Oreos® do contain cocoa powder. But you can substitute carob if you need to avoid it.

Maybe you’re thinking these look great…but what about all the sugar?

Each cookie contains less than two teaspoons of sweetener. Plus there is plenty of healthy fat in the cookie to help metabolize the sugar. The combination of the cookie and the frosting actually does have a purpose!

You also have to remember this is a treat. Itis not something to eat all the time.Gluten Free Inside Out Oreos® | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Homemade Oreos® are definitely a family favorite. We usually make them with the traditional combination – chocolate cookies with vanilla frosting.  Sometimes we get really fancy and make special holiday versions.

Now we can add gluten free inside out Oreos® to the list.

Homemade Oreos® are even very allergen friendly. They contain no gluten, dairy, nuts, corn, rice, eggs or soy. With a family like mine that is very important.  I don’t like anyone to feel left out.

Are you still trying to decide what to make your special man for Father’s Day? Or do you need a fun birthday treat? Gluten free inside out Oroes® are just what you need. They:

  • are free of allergens
  • are easy to make
  • can be made in advance
  • are a fun project for kids to help with
  • can be eaten without a big mess

This Father’s Day don’t just go for the traditional cake or chocolate chip cookies. Surprise all the special dads in your life with this fun, allergen friendly dessert that will make his heart and his tummy happy. 5. 1/2 tsp. unrefined sea salt
  6. 1/2 tsp. baking soda
  7. 1 tsp. vanilla
  8. 6 Tbsp. honey
  9. 1/2 cup melted butter, coconut oil, palm shortening, lard or tallow
Filling
  1. 1/2 cup palm shortening OR 1/4 cup palm shortening + 1/4 cup butter (at room temp)
  2. 3-4 Tbsp. cocoa powder
  3. 1 Tbsp. carob powder
  4. 10 Tbsp. tapioca flour
  5. 1/4 - 1/3 cup maple syrup

  2. In a large bowl combine the flour, sugar, salt and soda. Stir to remove any lumps.
  3. Add the vanilla, honey and melted fat. Stir to combine. Use hands to form a ball of dough.
  4. Split the dough in half. Place one half on a piece of parchment paper. Roll until 1/4" thin.

Notes
  1. This makes three trays of cookies if cutting shapes. Alternately you can simply roll the dough and cut it into squares and bake them without having to transfer the cookies to another sheet. You will only need two baking sheets of cookies with this method.
  2. You can replace the gluten free flours with whole wheat or all purpose flour.

Apple Pie Breakfast Parfait | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Apple Pie Breakfast Parfait

This apple pie breakfast parfait is a simple layered breakfast that is easy enough for kids to make and fancy enough for guests.
Apple Pie Breakfast Parfait | Homemade Dutch Apple PieSaturday mornings I like to make fun breakfasts and often let my kids choose what we have.  That usually includes things like:

But sometimes by Friday I just don’t have the energy or time to measure and soak flour and get things ready for baking. I need a simple breakfast that is still fun and delicious.

Enter the apple pie breakfast parfait! It is so easy to make that your kids can almost do it by themselves. But what’s even better about it is the taste.Apple Pie Breakfast Parfait | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Both of my big kids said it really tastes like apple pie. Then they proceeded to devour it!

There is no refined sugar (unless it is added to your granola). Apple pie breakfast parfait has a good balance of protein and fat from the yogurt and carbohydrates from the apples and granola. There is even some sea salt for balance if you use this kettle corn granola!

Don’t think this is just for kids, though!

Apple pie breakfast parfait looks so pretty and tastes so great it is perfect for entertaining house guests.

I would even make mini versions to serve at a brunch, whether for a playdate or a party.

I prepare the apple filling the night before so it can cool completely. Then in the morning I just layer the ingredients before breakfast. This would be a great thing for kids to do on their own or if they have friends over – build your own apple pie parfait!Apple Pie Breakfast Parfait | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Allergen Friendly Meal Plans Week of 6-14-15

This week’s allergen friendly meal plans and kitchen projects are all about easy summer food, getting ready for Father’s Day and vacation prep work.

Allergen Friendly Meal Plans | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

June is kind of crazy busy for us.  We didn’t really plan it that way. But it happened. My husband has been traveling, my daughter had a week of cheer camp and we’re taking a little vacation.

I’m so happy that my husband comes home this week!  We’ve been keeping up without him. But it sure is a lot nicer to have him around. And just in time for Father’s Day!

We’ve all been adjusting to school being out for the summer. I think my son is very happy to have big sister around to play with.

This week shouldn’t be too busy. We’ll make our weekly trip to the library and farmer’s market. My little one also has a check up.

I did more experimenting last week to confirm that all root veggies are out for my little one.  Even small amounts cause her major digestive issues (whether she eats them or I do…this time it was beets). So we’ll take those off the menu for now. I’m hoping this is the last thing we have to remove and we’ll have a very happy girl now.

I am still sticking with a rotational diet to help prevent any further food issues and to work on healing.

My son has been doing lots of healing lately as well.  We’re slowly able to try more foods again. Recently we tried peas. So far so good. I think we’ll try rice this week. If he could have rice that would open a whole new world of possibilities for us! I’ll be updating this allergy post soon with his progress.

I am ready to get started with my healing protocol after my hair analysis. I just ordered a couple of my supplements. I’ll order the rest soon and start adding them one at a time. I must admit – I’m quite excited to try a new probiotic. I hope this one works for me.

I’ve also been checking my BBT recently just to see how I’m doing. It’s been interesting to watch the patterns. But I have been amazed at how many days of normal temps I have!

My kitchen projects this week include:

I still have to plan our Father’s Day menu and any other possible treats. Then it’s time to start thinking about vacation prep and what food/snacks I’ll need with us.

Last week I posted recipes for fruit on the bottom yogurt and rhubarb applesauce. I’ve got a couple more fun recipes coming this week that you don’t want to miss!

Here are my allergen friendly meal plans for the week.

I tried my best to rotate our meats, grains and vegetables.  I’m starting to add lunch menus to some of the days. I have to be sure there is enough my little one can eat too now. She sure loves to eat!!  What is on your menu this week?

Rhubarb + Apple Sauce

This rhubarb + apple sauce combines the flavors of spring with a staple fruit available all year long to make a delicious side for any spring or summer meal.Rhubarb + Apple Sauce | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

School is out! Summer has officially begun. Before you move on to strawberries, blueberries and cherries sneak in one last rhubarb dish.

I know strawberries are the classic pairing with rhubarb. It makes sense since they are available at the same time of year. But I’m learning rhubarb goes with so many other fruits!  Cherry and rhubarb blend well in this jello.

Now you can mix rhubarb with a fall staple – apples. Since apples are readily available year round this side dish is easy to make in the spring or summer.

My kids loved this rhubarb applesauce. There is sweetness from the apples, spice from the cinnamon and hint of tart from the rhubarb.

Rhubarb applesauce is great any time of day. Breakfast, lunch, dinner or even a snack – you really can’t go wrong.

The preparation for this side is minimal. Since the apples cook down you don’t have to chop them much ahead of time, especially if you are going to puree the sauce. The rhubarb should be peeled first (I just do this with my hands) to remove the stringy outside. Then a rough chop and you’re all set.

Kids can help make rhubarb applesauce. Peeling rhubarb is a great task for them! Then using a safe knife to roughly chop apples (after you peel/core them) and put them in the pan. My kids love helping make this.

Are you getting bored with plain applesauce? Try a spruced up spring version with rhubarb added.  You’ll add vitamins and boost the flavor. It is also a great way to introduce your kids to rhubarb.

Rhubarb + apple sauce is perfect for early summer picnics, family barbeques and easy lunches while the kids are home.Rhubarb + Apple Sauce | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Stonyfield Oh My Yog! Review

*I am working with Stonyfield for this Oh My Yog! review post. I have been compensated for my time commitment to use this products. However, my opinions are entirely my own and I have not been paid to publish positive comments.*

It’s the moment we’ve all been waiting for…you can finally buy a full fat flavored yogurt again!

Stonyfield Oh My Yog Review | Homemade Dutch Apple PieAbout five years ago when I used to buy individual yogurts most of the time there were a couple of brands that sold full fat organic yogurt in a variety of flavors. That is what I always bought. Then all of a sudden they were harder and harder to find until all of the companies discontinued their full fat versions.

I suppose in hind sight it was good for me since it got me to start buying plain yogurt and flavoring it myself (which I still do now) or making fruit on the bottom yogurt. But I was very disappointed when it happened. Companies that cared about quality and nourishment hopped on the low fat/fat free bandwagon and got rid of their best products.

These days with the way we go through yogurt there is no way I could buy individual yogurts very often. I’d spend half of our grocery budget on yogurt!  Not to mention I’m generally not a fan of how much sugar is in flavored yogurts. But once in a while it’s a nice treat. It is also convenient when you head out on your summer vacation.

So it was fun for the family when we got to try some of the new Stonyfield Oh My Yog! full fat yogurt!Stonyfield Oh My Yog Review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Right now this variety of yogurt is very difficult to find where I live. I managed to find two containers (the only two) at a local health food store. So we only got to try one flavor. My kids had to share a yogurt. Hopefully soon they will be more readily available.

We sampled the apple cinnamon flavor (by we I mean my husband and two oldest kids…little one and I are still dairy free for the foreseeable future).

After the first bite my son declared, “Wow, this is sweet!”  He is used to the way we normally eat yogurt with just a touch of honey or maple syrup. My husband and daughter didn’t think it was overly sweet. So it just depends on your taste buds.

In terms of flavor they all loved the apple cinnamon. I hope we get a chance to try some of the other flavors since they are more unique – wild Quebec blueberry, gingered pear, orange cranberry, Madagascar vanilla bean and Pacific coast strawberry. If I could try one I’d go for the vanilla bean…vanilla has always been my favorite.Stonyfield Oh My Yog Review | Homemade Dutch Apple Pie

Although I couldn’t taste the yogurt here are some of my thoughts on it.

Things I like:

  • Full fat
  • No cornstarch (important when your child has a corn allergy!)
  • Unique flavors

Things I don’t like:

  • Natural flavor – I don’t normally let my kids eat products with this ingredient since I don’t know the source and it’s risky with kids with allergies. If it is so “natural” I wish they would just say what it is!!
  • Expensive – I’m sure it was partly because I bought it at a small store, but there is no way I could afford to spend $2 per yogurt on our family when I can buy a whole quart of plain yogurt for almost the same price.
  • Too much sugar – it may not have tasted super sweet but based on the nutrition facts there was still more sugar in it than I like to give my kids.

Oh My Yog! is not something I can afford to buy or want to serve on a daily basis. But it is a wonderful option when we are traveling or need a special treat. I love that I can finally buy full fat yogurt in individual servings again!

Oh My Yog! will help add a splash of color and flavor to your morning. How do you add color to your life? For me that involves spending time in the kitchen being creative with new recipes, ingredients and flavor combinations.

Have you tried Stonyfield Oh My Yog!? Which flavor sounds the best?
